Kharkhorin

Kharakhorin, is an ancient capital of Mongolia, was founded in 1220 in the Orkhon valley, at the crossroads of the Silk Road. Khubilai Khan, Genghis Khan’s grandson, changed the name of the Empire and renamed the Great Mongolian Empire to the Great Yuan dynasty and moved the capital of the Empire from Kharkhorin to Beijing in 1271. Kharkhorin enjoyed the status of the second capital and maintained the role of being the political, economic and cultural center of Mongolia. Even when the Mongolian khans resided in Beijing palaces and ruled from there, the Mongolian people continued to live in native Mongolia raising and tending their livestock.
In 1368, when the Yuan dynasty collapsed under the blow of the insurgence of the Chinese people, the khans and princes moved with their army back to Mongolia and made Kharkhorin once again the capital city.
The city remains a historical treasure of impressive dimensions. Exploring the historic city of Kharkhorin is a memorable and rewarding part of your travel
