Black Dragon Pool Scenic Spot

Black Dragon Pool is Grade 3A scenic spot, located to the northwest of Miyun County, and 93 kilometers away from Beijing. It is an erosion-type pool scenic spot formed by streams flowing in the valleys. In the early years of the last century, as the precipitation in the summer in Beijing is huge, the floods together with a great deal of sand and stones, rush against and erode the rock surfaces on the river bed, and form a large number of holes after a long period of time. Formally opened to the public in 1984, it has attracted many tourists.

The scenic spot covers an area of nine square kilometers. It is a narrow corridor, stretching for four kilometers, with more than 220 meters of height drop. The physiognomy belongs to middle mountains and hills. The heights of the summits on both the north and south sides are from 300 meters to 500 meters. The altitude of the bottom of the valley is from 150 meters to 370 meters. Called Wheel Valley, it is winding and twisting, with steep cliffs on both sides. There are more than 30 sights including Xuan Pool, Chen Pool, Luoyan Pool, Tongtian Pool, Pingsha Pool, Qu Pool, Dishui Pool, Wei Pool, Sandie Pool, Longxi Pool, Pearl String, Three-Pool Falls, Bottomless Pool, Black Dragon Pool, Dragon Doorway, Dragon Cleaving Stone, Hedgepig Stone, etc.

The main sceneries including:

Tongtian Falls: The cliffs are vertical and steep, as if being cut by knives. The falls are flying down with a height drop of more than 50 meters, with splashing water and fog pervasive in the valley.

Miren Cave: 15 meters in depth, it can hold more than 100 people. To facilitate travelers, a cave has been dug out with 38 steps from the entrance to the exit, thus called “Tongtian Cave”. Through this cave, one can arrive at the top of the Tongtian Falls.

Black Dragon Pool: It is only four to five square meters in acreage but 25.6 meters in depth. It is the deepest pool known in Beijing. The walls around the pool are smooth. On the south side, the pool is in oval shape, while the north part has steep cliffs. The water drops vertically from the cliffs more than 10 meters high. There is a narrow gap in the middle of the cliffs, no more than one meter in width, and tens of meters in length. There are also two small pools in the narrow gap. One is called “Spring Flower Pool”, and another is called “Autumn Moon Pool”. The two pools are like two shy girls, hidden in their boudoirs. If the tourists would like to see the panorama of the pools, they have to wait until the spring and autumn. Since 1985, activities such as talking walks in spring, seeking coolness in summer, picking fruits in autumn and ice climbing in winter, are held every year, which have attracted many tourists.
