Mountain Miaofeng Scenic Area is located in Mentougou District of Beijing along the No.109 state highway, at the conjunction area of Haidian, Changping and Mentougou districts in Beijing, and is about 55 kilometers from downtown Beijing.
The scenic area is known for its ancient temples, weird pine trees and rocks, and the main peak of the mountain is 1,291 meters above sea level, and this is the highest peak standing closest to Beijing. In the scenic area, there are numerous weird rocks and ancient trees; there are rich biological resources, with the forest coverage at more than 90%. This area is one of the key regions for the protection of biological diversity in the Beijing area, and there is also a huge rose plantation, with an area of about 10,000 mu (660 hectares), the largest in north China.
Mountain Miaofeng (the Huiji Temple) hosts the largest traditional temple fair in north China, and this tradition started in the Ming Dynasty and is still preserved nowadays. During the temple fair each year (April 1-15 on the lunar calendar), hundreds of thousands of devotees from across the country flock to the Buddhist temple to worship and offer sacrifices, and hundreds of folk performances are staged during this period, and the scene is very spectacular each year. Mountain Miaofeng is named the birth place of China's folk customs and culture and is known as the cradle of China's folklore, and in 2005, a China folk customs stele was erected at Mountain Miaofeng to mark its contribution. |
