Qinglong Canyon

Located near the Dashuiyu Pass of the ancient Great Wall in Huaibei Town, Huairou District, Beijing, Qinglong Canyon is a national water conservancy scenic spot, including green mountains, crystal water and ancient Great Wall. It used to be called Dashuiyu Reservoir.

In the 1970s, the first concrete gravity-arch dam in Beijing, which was 59 meters high, 283 meters long and four meters wide, was built on the exit of the Dashuiyu Reservoir, so as to form a valley type reservoir containing 14.60 million cubic meters of water and with a drainage area of 55.6 square kilometers. The words of “Qinglong Canyon” at a height of six meters are written on the exterior side of the dam. The scenic spot was developed by Huairou Water Resource Bureau in 1995, and was formally opened to the public in 1996.

Occupying an area of 150 hectares, stretching more than 10 li, and 30 to 50 meters in width, the Qinglong Canyon has mountains winding along on both sides. The original Great Wall is lying on top of the mountains. There are dense plantations, deep valleys, beautiful mountain flowers, and flowing streams. The mountains, water and ancient Great Wall contrast finely with each other. The elegance of the south and the majesty of the north are both embodied here.

This place used to be the “Dashuiyu Pass” of the Ming Great Wall, which was built in the period from 1403 to 1424. Occupying a strategic position, this pass has three gates in the east, south and west. It is the transportation fortress on the way from the capital to Dage and Rehe in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The canyon has a long history, a unique geographical position and a pleasing and cool climate all year long. The mountainous area of the canyon is full of steep mountains and running waters. The annual precipitation is about 800 mm. The dam is in the middle of the scenic spot, dividing it into four parts. The water in the south part is about one meter in depth, so bamboo rafts and rowing boats are mainly used here. The water in the north is 40 to 50 meters in depth, so dragon boat, barge and speed boat are provided here. In the summer, there are beach bathing spots here. In the west, there is the Qinglong Canyon ropeway, which is 800 meters in length, and 369 meters in drop height. In the east area, there are recreation items such as bungee, rock climbing, prompt drop, swing on water, and directional glide, etc. Since 1988, activities such as planting festival, appreciating flowers in the spring, passing summer in a leisurely way, picking fruits in the autumn, and snow and ice travel in the winter have attracted many tourists. There are more than 20 scenic spots, including clouds on the cliffs, dragon in the gully, foggy waves, old man peering at water, one stone and six sceneries, faerie on the tortoise, rabbit watching the city, rushing falls, Heaven Emperor's stage, etc.
