Introduction of Macao Special Administrative Area

Located at the west side of the Pearl River's estuary, it consists of the Macao Peninsula, the Dangzai Island and the Luhuan Island. Since ancient times, Macao has been Chinese territory with its name being Haojing in the Ming Dynasty; however it was gradually occupied by Portuguese. On December 20, 1999, the People's Republic of China formally took it over from Portugal and regained its sovereignty. Macao's culture is a combination of those of China and Portugal, and its abundant scenic spots, historical relics, and Chinese and foreign architectures all witness its history and experience of hundreds of years. The financial revenue of Macao is mostly from gambling, tourism, transshipment, and transportation.
