Fangcun Flower Fair Garden

Fangcun District lies in the southwest of Guangzhou, with beautiful natural scene, superior locations and convenient traffic, which is surrounded by Pearl River except for west section with a river line of 31 kilos. Huadi River runs across the district from south to north, to form a double surrounding situation. River surrounding at 3 sides with dense river networks as well as the humid climate provide superior conditions to develop ecological agriculture.

Fangcun was named “Flower Place” and “Thousand Year Flower Home”, which has a flower growing history of 1,700 years and is the cradle of Lingnan bonsai. Numerous scholars and poets have left a great number of poems to praise Fangcun. Kang Youwei wrote “The flowers are still in bloom in thousand year flower home, the former Liu Lang may return now” in Visit to Flower Place.

Fangcun is the major flower production export base in Guangzhou, which is praised as the cradle of flower and bonsai. There are 40,000 mus of cultivated field, among which the plantation of flowers accounts for over 12,000 mus. There are 250 flower plants, with 2,000 kinds, 480 categories and 170 faculties. The flower and bonsai produced are exported to Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, West Europe Hong Kong, Macao and North America besides domestic sale, with an annual sales amount of 1 billion yuan and foreign currency profit of 10 billion US dollars. The export accounts for 70% in Guangdong, which is a real production base for flower and bonsai.

Fangcun are most famous for jasmine, carambola and olive. Recently, flowers are imported from overseas, like Dutch tulip, Belgium azalea, African violet and Brazilian sago. The flowers are divided into different functions such as industrial flower, environmental improvement flower, home decoration flower, gift flower, seasonal flower and fresh cut flower, to meet the need home and abroad. The plantation of flowers has also developed from soil plantation towards modern scientific plantation, which facilitated the emergence of the first natural flavor enterprise—Guangzhou Baihua Flavor Factory.

The poet Chen Hua in Qing Dynasty once wrote, “Out of the large population, most people you meet are flower farmers”. which describes the features of Fangcun vividly. Now, Fangcun is invited to attend the international flower expo every year, returning with awards each time.

Fangcun is the cradle of Lingnan bonsai arts, which combines the arts and theories of Lingnan School of Painting. Consistent research and creation, as well as the rich natural resources create the unique Lingnan bonsai. The bonsai plants include common jasminorange, elm, Fujian Tea, Sparrow plum, sago, open herding, azalea, pine, guava and red almond. The style is featured by rich layers, natural characteristics and elegance. The bonsai arts in Decha, Haibei and Longxi are unique with exquisite handicrafts. The specifications cover a great range from human-size bonsai to palm-like miniature bonsai. There are also medium bonsai planted in pot of 30-40 m long.

The spectacular fish in Fangcun is named “flower in water”, with 100 categories. The breeding area covers more than 40 hectares, with an annual income of 10 million yuan. Flower, bonsai and spectacular fish are three treasures of Fangcun.

The tourist resources are rich in Fangcun. “Datong Smoky Drizzle” was listed one of Eight Sceneries of Guangzhou since Song Dynasty. “Night Moon on White Goose Pool” is listed one of Eight Sceneries of Guangzhou in Qing Dynasty. The more attractive are the historical garden sites. Since Song Dynasty, the garden arts have been developing quickly. There are more than 30 gardens in the later Qing Dynasty, among which the most famous 8 gardens are Liufang Garden, Zuiguan Garden, Renxiang Garden, Qunfang Garden, Neo-Changchun Garden, Yuxiang Garden, Cuilin Garden and Pinhong Garden with their unique characteristics.
