The Tianhou Palace is situated at the foot of Dajiao Hill which was a military stronghold during the opium war. Newly opened, it is one of the most magnificent of its kind with a 14.5-metre tall statue of the Goddess of the Sea. The statue is made from 365 pieces of granite, one for each day of the year, symbolizing protection of the region all year round. According to legend, she came from a fishing background during the Song Dynasty and died while trying to save others from drowning. The palace was built in memory of this brave act.
