The Museum of Biology, standing on the Guangzhou south campus of Sun Yet-sen University, is based in the Ma Wenhui Hall, which was built with donations from Hong Kong compatriots. The antecedent of the museum is the Animal, Insect and Plant Specimens Section of the School of Life Science, with the earliest specimen dating back to 1817. At present, the Museum of Biology holds 220,000 plant specimens, 600,000 insect specimens, and 30,000 stuffed, soaked, bone and fossil specimens, as well as invaluable specimens of ancient creature fossils.
The museum is China's only university biological museum holding a large collection of specimens of precious Chinese and foreign creatures and featuring prominent South China faunal and floral characteristics; it enjoys a prestigious reputation in the international biological community.
By taking advantage of the university's educational and research resources, the museum provides thematic popular-science lecture series and hands-on experiments on microorganisms, plants, animals and ancient animals for primary and secondary school students from time to time. These programs not only tap the university biological museum's advantageous resources, butalso enrich the extracurricular activities of these students.
