The raw material of Mountain Shoushan Stone sculptures originates from the pyrophyllite of Shoushan Village, about 40 kilometers to the north of Fuzhou. The curious workmanship brings about flowers, fruits, figures, animals and landscapes on the stone, while they can also be carved into seal, stationery, smoking set and flower vase. Generally, Shoushan Stone looks warm, sleek and refined, with clear texture and vivid color. After engraving and polishing, those stained stones are granted the distinctive appeal of cultural arts for collection. Shoushan stones are divided into three categories: Shankeng, Shuikeng and Tiankeng, and there are more than 100 varieties. The Tiankeng Stone, called the “Emperor of Stones”, is also named Tianhuan Stone, which is so precious that there was a saying of “It is easy to have gold but difficult to find Tianhuan Stone”. |
