Mountain Heaven Gate

Mountain Heaven Gate is independent and platform shaped, 8km from the downtown of Zhangjiajie City. The altitude of the mountain is 1,517.9m. The flat top covers an area of 2 square kilometers. On the east side cliff, there is a limestone cave running through the top like a huge gate. It was so named Mountain Heaven Gate.

The altitude counting from the bottom of the cave is 1,246m. The cave is 131.5m high, 37m wide and 30m deep. The altitude and strategically located and difficult of access are rare in the world.

Mountain Heaven Gate was recorded in the history. It was first recorded during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Later in 246 during the Three Kingdoms Period, it was named Mountain Heaven Gate by Emperor Wujing and Tianmen County was set up accordingly.

Li River runs in the valley of the mountains. Within 10km the height different is as high as over 1,300m. It thus formed the precipitous Mountain Heaven Gate.

Mountain Heaven Gate has rich vegetation. The forest coverage is over 90%. On the top of the mountain, there are about 307 acres sub-primeval forest. 134 families of vascular bundle plants are found. Vertical vegetation distribution is clearly seen in the mountain. The mountain is also a natural herb resource, where over 200 herbs have been found.

The mountain is also a heaven for wild animals. Over 10 spices such as deer, macaque, wild boar, fox, wild goat, unicorn, pangolin inhabit in the mountain.

Mountain Heaven Gate has a long history. It used to be a ideal place for personages to retreat. Cultural relics and historical sites like temples, tombs and steles still can be seen in the mountain.

The main scenic spots of Mountain Heaven Gate are Gorge Cave, Heaven Gate Cave, Heaven Groove Waterfall, Temple of Mountain Heaven Gate, Cloud Dream Peak and so on.
