Recently, the Mahao Cliff Tombs have become the Leshan Han-dynasty Cliff Tomb Museum. In this museum, the Mahao Cliff Tombs are the principal exhibit, shown in two exhibition halls: the South Exhibition Hall and the North Exhibition Hall, in which unearthed cultural relics from Han-dynasty Tombs can be seen. It holds the survey of Leshan Han-dynasty Cliff Tombs. These cliff tombs were misnamed as “Ape Cave”, “Savage's Cave” and some other names. During the period of the War of Resistance Against Japan, universities and colleges of the whole country began to move inland, and Yang Jigao and Shang Chengzha, professors of Nanjing Jinling University, carried out first-hand investigations of the Mahao Cliff Tombs. They believed that these were a type of grave from the period of the Donghan Dynasty, and they carved the research inscription in seal character:“For these Han-dynasty tomb figures, there are in total 35 different ones, which are the finest among the tombs in Nan'an (Leshan at the present)”. In January of the year Minguo 29, it was found by Yang Jigao (Panqu) and affirmed by Shang Chengzha (Yufan). In October, Yang and Shang led the Chinese cultural research institute of Jinling University here and made rubbings to preserve it for future generations in the hope that they would prevent it from being damaged forever. |
