Mountain Tianzhu Scenery Area

Mountain Tianzhu is located within the boundaries of Qianshan County in the southwest of Anhui Province, with a scenic area covering 82.46 square kilometers. Because of it's dramatic, precipitous beauty, the highest peak——“Heavenly Pillar Peak”, the mountain has the name Tianzhu. It is one of the first-listed key national scenic areas and a 4A-grade scenic spot as well as a national civilized forest park.

Mountain Tianzhu is known as a beautiful mountain with both magnificence and delicacy. There are a number of scenic spots including 42 peaks, 16 rocks, 17 cliffs, 53 grotesque stones, 18 ridges, 25 caves and 48 mountain fastnesses.

With towering pines, grotesque rocks, running waterfalls and springs, and canyons, secluded caves, defiles and ancient mountain strongholds, the mountain resort combines the features of both Mountain Huangshan and Mountain Lushan, imposing and tranquil.
 
The mountain has been divided into eight scenic zones, namely, Meicheng, Yezhai, Yujing, Mazu, Dongguan, Feilai, and the main peak.

Tianzhu Peak, with an altitude of 1,488.4 meters, is the highest peak. The Mystery Valley, with valleys and caves connecting to each another, is reputed as the No.1 granite cave. Liandai (make pills of immortality) Lake, located at the place of 1,100 meters above sea level, is the third largest alpine lake in China. The nine great waterfalls flowing down from steep cliffs are famous as well. 
The whole mountain resort boasts 119 families of vegetation, which amount to over 1,000 kinds.

There are tens of species of rare animals, of which Yulin Mu (fish scale tree), Tiannv (fairy maiden) Flower, and the Giant salamander are called Three Treasures in Mountain Tianzhu.

According to the ancient record, Emperor Wu Di of the Early Han Dynasty praised Mountain Tianzhu as “The Highest Mountain in Southern China”.

Mountain Tianzhu boasts many cultural relics and ancient remains. The famous Third Patriarch Temple was the place where the Patriarch of the Buddhist Zen Sect, Sengcan, did carya (observing and doing) and is now a temple protected by the state.

Mountain Tianzhu was a gathering place of ancient Anhui cultures. Taoists worshiped and listed it the No.14 Dongtian (blessed spot) and No.57 Fudi (fairyland). the second and third Buddhist patriarchs of Dhyana Sect was attracted to visited here. Tangfoguang (Budda glory) Temple and Nanliangshangu (South Valley) Temple experienced a certain period of prosperity. Such great men of letters as Li Bai, Bai Juyi, Su Shi, Wang Anshi, Huang Tingjian left here about 400 inscriptions engraved upon the walls of cliff, showing the essence of all types of calligraphy arts and literature from all periods of different dynasties. The quantity and quality of the inscriptions on the ancient Stone Cow Cave top all other places in the province. The excavation of ancient cultural historic site near Xuejiagang Village unveiled a primitive scene in the Neolithic Age.
