Located in Shexian County and built in the Twelfth Year of the Wanli Reign of Emperor Shenzong in the Ming Dynasty (1584 A.D.), Xuguo Stone Archway is shaped as Chinese character “Kou” (mouth), with eight pillars standing at four sides which bring it a folk name of “eight-foot Archway”. Because it was built by ministerial Xu Guo, so it is also called “Scholar Archway”.
Constructed like woodwork, the archway has a close makeup and logical layout. It is 11.54 meters long from north to south, 6.77 meters wide from east to west, and 11.4 meters high.
Two three-story buildings with three houses and four pillars in the front and the back and two three-story buildings with one house and two pillars on both sides compose the whole archway. The cyan and green stones and the woodwork-like designs make it a folk architectural color painting.
Due to its simple and expressive structure and vivid sculptures, the archway brings a feel of simple and elegant, tiny and gentle. |
