The chestnuts are mainly produced in the town Xinghan and Baidian of Guangde. The chestnut from Jinjilong Village of Xinghan is the most famous. It is big and delicious and tastes fragrant. Generally, each one weighs more than 20 grams. It is brightly purplish red with beautiful appearance. If it is roasted with chicken or meat, it will be delicacy at the banquet. It can also be made into chestnut thick soup or sugar-fried chestnut, which has a distinct flavor.
The chestnut from Jinjilong Village of Xinghan had always been the tribute since Qing Dynasty. It is said that the first time Empress Dowager Cixi saw this kind of chestnut, which is round and red shining, she fell in love with it. Pointing at the convoy official, she smiled and said, “The chestnut is brighter than your scarlet gown”. Therefore, it won the name “Scarlet gown chestnut”, which is even used till today. |
