Pingnan County has long been known as “Hometown of Chinese Folk Operas”. Locally called “Plebeian Opera”, and praised as “Living Fossil of Siping Melody of Ming Dynasty”, Siping Opera is an old-fashioned opera originating from the region of Huizhou, Anhui in Jiajing Reign of the Ming Dynasty. It is mainly composed of Siping Melody, which is sung without makeup and acting on the stage and chimed by the backstage. At the brink of extinction in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, it was introduced into Fujian. Since then, over 400 hundred years have passed. At the height of power and splendor, the opera was once spread all over Pingnan County and 20-odd villages of its neighboring counties and cities, even to as far as Southwest Jiangxi and East Zhejiang. |
