Cangzhou's martial arts originated in the Sui and Tang Dynasties and later flourished both in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. This area has produced many martial art masters of 52 sorts of martial arts. With this legacy, Cangzhou was honored with the title of “Home of Martial Arts” by the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports in 1992. It was the first time that such an area was best owed with this title.
The old saying—“with taijiquan, one makes the society peaceful; with the baji boxing, one makes the country stable”—indicates how rooted the martial arts a re in Cangzhou. In fact, the founder of the baji boxing was born in Cangzhou's very own Mengcun County.
There have been many local martial art masters well known in winning honor for the nation in the contests against foreign fighters. In Shanghai in 1903, Wang Ziping defeated fighters from the United States, Great Britain and France. After his victory, Mr. Qi Baishi-a famous master of traditional Chinese painting excitedly wrote him a congratulatory verse with the following words: fighting against the tiger in the southern mountain; driving away the dragon from the deep pool.
The local martial art masters have contributed a lot to the development of this ancient practice in China as well. For instance, Zhang Zhijiang, a general in Kuomintang's army, militantly advocated saving the nation with healthy armies when he was in charge of the central Wushu Academy in 1928. There were over one hundred teachers and students from Cangzhou.
Since the founding of New China, the martial arts-one of the outstanding national cultural heritages has flourished. There are increasingly more sorts of martial arts being practiced and refined in CangZhou. Both the baji boxing and the pigua boxing have been listed among the top ten traditional boxings whose skills and routines are accepted in the martial art contests and are publicized inside and outside China. There have been many martial art talents trained by Cangzhou Physical Education School, Cangzhou Martial Art Academy, and Mengcun Baji Boxing International Training Center. |
