Tianmo Desert, 90 kilometers away from Beijing, is located in Mountain Longbao in the southwest of Donghuayuan, Huailai. As the western exit of Beijing, Tianmo Desert links together the Badaling Great Wall and Kangxi Grassland.
There are two grand Sand dunes. The east sand dune is more than 300 meters long from north to south and the west one is nearly l,000 meters long. Covering an area of nearly 500 mu, both of the dunes are over 100 meters wide and about 30 meters high. The scenic spot is at the foot of Mountain Qipan in the south and beside the Guanting Reservoir on the north. Admiring such scenic splendors of Tianmo Desert, together with mountains, grassy marshland and Gobi, one can not help sighing with emotions, “The solitary smoke rises high in a vast stretch of yellow sand and the round sun is setting gradually into the river.” There is no source of sand in the vicinities of several hundred kilometers. Is it formed by the fierce northwest wind, piling-up grains of sand or by changing river courses? Some research has been done, but it still remains a mystery.
Tianmo Desert is also a famous outdoor base of film and television. Parts of the scenes are filmed here in more than 100 films and television plays, such as HuanZhugege ,Pilgrimage to the West, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, etc. |
