Wenchang Pagoda is about two kilometers south of Hepu County. It was built in the 40th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1613 A.D.) and has a long history of over 300 years. The pagoda, 36 meters high, is octagonal with 8.1 meters high tower base and 2.6 meters inside diameters. It is narrower and narrower layer by layer from the bottom layer upward. The spire is a model of a red calabash. Every layer opens west and east ventilation doors and others are false ones used for decoration. The body of the pagoda is white and the edges and arched doors are red. The white and red color is well matched so that the pagoda looks simple and handsome. |
