The Dance of Shigong is a popular folk dance around Nanning. The dance is often accompanied by vocal songs that are sung in Ping Hua (a local dialect), so it is also called “Ping Hua Shigong”. Generally there are two kinds of Shigong Dance, which includes the outer and inner temple dance. The inner Dance of Shigong usually integrates with the Daogong. The performance involves mainly civil and military activities and it mostly shows ceremonies to pray and offer sacrifice to gods or ancestors. The outer Dance of Shigong mainly reflects the daily workand life of the local people. When there is a funeral or a new bridge to be built, people usually invite Shigong to dance. There are group dances and solo dances, alternately performed, accompanied by drums and gongs. They perform scenes of inviting the gods, sending off the soul, and dispelling ghosts through dance. The Dance of Shigong is rich in movements and postures. |
