Nonggang Natural Reserve lies among Zhubo, Wude, Shangjin villages in the middle and north Longzhou County and connects Jinlong Town on the north. It has a total area of 101 square kilometers, with an average altitude of 400 meters and the highest elevation of 700 meters. There are 30 peaks a square kilometer on the average, and 80 at most. Its forest coverage is 70 percent. In 1980, it was listed as a state natural reserve. Up till now, it is the biggest and best-preserved karst landform reserve in China.
The reserve is rich in flora and fauna. It is home to 1,282 kinds of plants, 123 species of animals, 439 species of insects and over 100 species of fungi. Some rare plants particular to the reserve include Camellia chrysantha tuyama, bsienmu, Garcinia paucinervis, Cephalomappa sinensis, Deutzianthus tonkinensis, Parashorea chinensis etc. and rare animals include white-headed leaf monkey, Froncois' leaf monkey, macaque, South China tiger,clouded leopard, zibet, masked civet, snub-nosed monkey, serow, preceded spot hornbill, and red jungle fowl, etc. In the reserve, there is a 48.5-meter-high and 3-meter-round bsienmu. It is 2,000 years old and the biggest in the world.
The reserve is of high value for scientific research and tourism. In 1997, a scenic spot named King of Bsienmu was developed, and a road was simply built so that visitors could get access to the spot, admire the bsienmu and appreciate the ceremony of original inhabitants offering a sacrifice to the holy tree. |
