Huangshi City is located in southeast Hubei Province, south bank of the Yangtze River. Lying at the foot of mountains and beside rivers, the city boasts its picturesque environment. It lies northeast to the Yangtze River, east to the golden channel of the Yangtze River opposite Xishui County, Qichun County and Wuxue City, north to E'zhou City, west to Wuchang County, southwest to Xianning City and Tongshan County, southeast to Wuning County and Ruichang County of Jiangxi Province. Quality roads go through all villages of the city and highways lead to all places across the country. Shanghai-Chengdu Expressway passes through northern part of the urban area leading to Chongqing and Chengdu to West and Ningbo and Shanghai to East. Wuchang-Huangshi-Jiujiang Railway is connected with Zhejiang-Jiangxi Railway to East and Beijing-Guangzhou Railway to West. The waterway relying on the Yangtze River leads to the sea. All of these result in convenient transportation and distinct location superiority of Huangshi City.
Huangshi City, 115o East Longitude and 30o North Latitude, is located on the northern side of Mountain Mubu, and it is an intermediate zone between Mountain Mubu and alluvial plain of the Yangtze River bed with many low hills. With the subtropical monsoon climate, it has distinct seasons and abundant precipitation. Annual average temperature is 17℃ with the highest temperature of 38℃ and the lowest temperature of -3℃. Annual average frost-free days: 264 days. Annual average precipitation: 1,400mm. Snow: occasional light snow from December to February of every year. Wind: the strongest wind force is Grade 5 or 6. Air pollution: meet the Second-grade of Air Environmental Quality Index (GB3095-32). Air pollution index: less than 100 and normally 50.
Major mountains in Huangshi City are Mountain Dongfang (Orient), Mountain Huangjing, Mountain Yuntai, Mountain Fuzi (Father and Son), Mountain Qifeng (Seven Peaks), etc. The highest peak with the absolute elevation of 860m is Nanyan Ridge, the main peak of Mountain Qifeng, the second highest peak with the absolute elevation of 839.9m the Taipo (Granny) Top and the lowest area with the absolute elevation of 8.7m is the bed of Tanhe River in Fushui Nancheng in Yangxin County. The Yangtze River runs through the city from north to east, from Aijiawan of E'zhou City to Tianmaling of Yangxin County with the length of 76.87 km. Major water systems in the city are Fushui River, Daye Lake, Bao'an Lake, Haikou Lake, Cihu Lake, Qingshan Lake, Sanshan Lake, Huama Lake, Gehu Lake, Jingshanyuan and Shangcao Lake. The biggest water system is Fushui River in Yangxin County, which derives its source from Tongshan Mountain, runing into the Yangtze River from east to west with the total length of 196 km, the drainage area of 5310 km2 and the length of 81 km within Yangxin County.
The total drainage area of rivers in Huangshi City is 2,245 km2, including 1,339 km2 of Daye Lake and 570 km2 of Bao'an Lake. There is karst landform with a great many limestone caves in the city, most of which are be of great value in tourist development. The fragmentized terrain of the whole city slopes from Southwest to Northeast, and there are fragmentary intermountain basins in some places. The farmlands on low hills slope gently and the area along the river has a lower elevation.
The outline of Huangshi urban area looks like a Chinese character “入” surrounded on three sides by mountains and faced on one side with the Yangtze River with picturesque Cihu Lake in the central urban area. There are many scenic spots such as Mountain Dongfang (Orient), Mountain Xisai and Feiyun Cave in the urban. Cihu Lake with the area of 8 km2, the scenic tourist attraction well-known far and near, is like a bright pearl mounted in the center of the urban. The land for city construction in the urban is usually with the absolute elevation of 18-50m.
Huangshi City has sound geological conditions with great earth bearing strength of 15-20t/m2 except for below 10t/m2 in few places with mollisoil layer. Rich ground water reserves and high-quality construction geology are good conditions applicable to urban construction and development. |
