The Huangsiqiao Ancient Fort is 30km west of Fenghuang County seat. It was first built in 686 during the Tang Dynasty and named Weiyang County. During the Ming Dynasty of Jiaqing Emperor's rule, it was renamed as Fenghuang Camp, which means Phoenix Camp. During the Qing Dynasty, troops were stationed in the fort to repress Miao rebels.
The wall of the fort is about 5m high, 2m wide and the girth of the wall is 500m. The fort covers an area of over 10 acres and has 3 main gates. The construction of the fort combined local construction techniques. Bricks were carefully selected even grey limestone. Limestone bricks were laid and agglutinated by mortar mixed with lime and sticky rice gruel.
Huangsiqiao Ancient Fort is valuable for architecture research of ancient cities as well as the research on ancient Fenghuang City. It has been put down on the list of the important historical sites to be given special protection of Hu'nan Province. |
