Fengyang, once was named as “Zhongli Country”, underwent the Dynasties of Tang, Song, Yuan. In 1374, the Emperor of Ming Dynasty endowed his hometown Fengyang with its name of “Fengyang”. With its prominent glory, Fengyang was famous for being the hometown of the Emperor of Ming Dynasty. One year after the Emperor Zhu took the throne, he established the first Royal City——“Ming ZhongDu Royal City” in China, which provided the model for the later Nanjing and Beijing Royal City. Up until now, several relics preserved from then Royal City has been listed in the state or provincial key relic. Recently, the Royal City is trying to be listed to stand alongside the world cultural heritage.
The folk culture in Fengyang is famous for its “Fengyang Flower-drum Opera”, which has long got the reputation as the “Oriental Ballet”. In 1955, “Fengyang Flower-drum Opera” was introduced to the stage in Beijing and won prizes. “Phoenix Painting”, with its unique craftsmanship, rich colors and profound implication of meaning, has become the top works of Chinese folk art.
