Xiuning County is situated in the most south of Anhui Province, is bounded with Zhejiang and Jiangxi Provinces. The total area of the county is 2,151 square kilometers, governing 9 towns, 12 rural areas and 259 administration villages, with a total population of 274 thousand. It is a typical mountainous area county. The county has outstanding geographical advantage and convenient traffic. It is 18 kilometers away from Huangshan city, and there are many main route ways to notable scenic areas.

Xiuning was established as county in Jian'an 13 Year in East Han Dynasty, having a history of 1,700 years. Emperor Sui Wen named the county “Xiu Ning”, adopted each word from Xiu Yang and Hai Ning, meaning “propitious and peaceful”. As one of “one government and six counties” in ancient Huizhou State, Xiuning was known by its beautiful landscape, plentiful tea, numerous merchants and good writing style. Its Hui inkstick, Rigui and so on handicrafts were famous at home and abroad, the Wan An compass had won the gold prize in 1915 Panama Exposition.

The county is “the Chinese fist Number One Scholars County” with abundant cultural resource. From the year 1217 to 1880, there were 19 civil or military Number One Scholars coming from here, ranking the head of the other counties in China. Throughout the ages, fine landscape fostered many supernatural talents from age to age, such as famous scholars Zhu Sheng, Dai Zhen, the abacus calculation master Cheng Dawei, drama artist Wang Yanna, the calligraphy and painting artists Wang Shishen, Ding Yunpeng, Hu Zhengya and so on.

Xiuning County is affluent with tour and zoology resources, the scenery here has great charm, Mountain Qiyun is the first village of Chinese Taoism. It is 15 kilometers far from the county; Emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty named it “the First Famous Mountain in the South of Changjiang River”. Mountain Qiyun has 36 odd peaks, 72 strange rocks, and many waters, bridges, holes and cliffs, forming a special characteristic landscape. Many scholars and merchants of past dynasties came to visit it, such as Li Bai, Zhu Xi, Tang Yin, Hai Rui, Xu Xiake, Yu Dafu and so on, they had left a lot of marvelous writings and engravings. Since the mountain lift was opened in 1993, more than one million tourists at home and abroad have ascended to view the beautiful scene of the mountain.

Xiuning County is the hometown of organic tea in China, holding abundant products resource. It is situated at the north of the central Asia tropics, so the moist climate condition is good for the growth of the forests, the tea, the fruits and the crops. At present, the area of its woodland is about 150 thousand hectares, the amount of growing stock is 4.5 million cubic meters, and the percentage of forest cover reaches 80%. As “the first exporting county of green tea in China”, the County Party Committee and the government of Xiuning in recent years has insisted on a strategy which is to “lift green brand, walk green road”, and has gained remarkable effect. The county has been ranked as “state organic tea standardization demonstration plot”, “demonstration base of nuisance free tea producing county” successively. The area of the organic tea gardens with the issued certificates, the exporting amount of Green Tea and Mei Tea all take the first place among the counties in China. It has more than 1,200 years history of making tea, producing traditional famous teas of “Lang Yuan Song Luo”, “Bai Yue Huang Ya” and “Jing Long Que She” etc, and some good tea of newly opening out such as “Xin An Yuan Yin Hao” and “Song Luo Shan”.

Since reform and opening, the economy here has acquired great development. Especially in the last few years, the speed of economical development is keeping expedite, the project of society is developing completely. In agriculture it stresses on lifting “zoology” banner, exerting resource advantage, holding structural adjustment, and advancing the process of agriculture to production. In next few years, Xiuning County will insist on the developing thought, exerting to implement the strategy of sustainable development, and to mend the paces in modernization, informationization and urbanization, trying hard to construct the county with beautiful surroundings, booming markets, optimum industries and good healthy people.
