Mountain Shangfang National Forest Park

Located in Hancunhe Town in Fangshan District, Beijing and 70 kilometers from the city, Mountain Shangfang National Forest Park is one of the twenty key sample National Forest Parks in China.

As early as in the Eastern Wei Dynasty, monks cultivated the mountain and built temples, roads and had trees planted. After reconstructions and renovations in successive dynasties, a magnificent building complex came into being in the Ming Dynasty. Paintings and poems were made for it and temples and pavilions were built, forming a religious landscape with bridges, pavilions, temples, caves, rocks, peaks and woods. A historical saying goes that Suzhou and Hangzhou in the south, Mountain Shangfang in the north.

Main scenic spots are: nine caves with Yunshui (Cloud and Water) Cave as their representative, seventy-two temples with Doulü Temple as their representative, twelve mountain peaks with Zhaixingtuo as their representative, four Tree Kings with the bodhi tree as their representative, as well as the location of the film Conquering Huashan Mountain, the heavenly ladder, heavenly pit and more.

Mountain Yunmeng National Forest Park

Mountain Yunmeng National Forest Park is located in the northwestern part of Miyun County, and the park gate is at the 81.5-kilometer point of the Jingfeng (Beijing-Fengning) highway.

Mountain Yunmeng is one of the well-known picturesque mountains in suburban Beijing, and is a forest park of a unique landform. In the park, the mountains are high and towering, the valleys and ravines are steep and deep, the peaks and stones are weirdly shaped, there are many waterfalls and gushing springs, the clouds and mist are beautiful and mysterious, and forests, flowers and grasses are vibrant and thick. All these form the picturesque natural scenery, and the mountain is so nicknamed “small Huangshan Mountain in Beijing.”

Mountain Yunmeng National Forest Park occupies a total area of 2,208 hectares, and the elevation of its main peak is 1,414 meters. The forest park has rich scenic resources, thick forests and plenty of animal and plant varieties, and 711 species of green plants. From April to October, bushes and flowers blossom, producing a vibrant and beautiful picture. According to weather statistics, temperature in Mountain Yunmeng is general 6-7 degrees centigrade lower than that in the plain area, and the content of negative ion in the air is 6-12 times bigger than that in the cities, and air humidity and ventilation conditions are all favorable. The national forest park is the first choice for escaping from summer heat and for carrying out forest ecological tourism.

In the Mountain Yunmeng National Forest Park, there is a legend that Sun Bin and Pang Juan kowtowed to Guiguzi to learn arts and skills from him, and this legend is evidenced by the ruins of the Temple of Sun Bin at the main peak of Mountain Yunmeng. These add much atmosphere of mystery to the Mountain Yunmeng. The strange peaks, weirdly-shaped rocks, ponds and waterfalls, seas of clouds, forests and ancient ruins of the Mountain Yunmeng form different vivid landscapes. Mountain Yunmeng integrates the functions of sightseeing and tourism, escaping from summer heat and vacationing, fitness and recuperation, scientific exploration and expedition together. At the same time, it is an ideal place for students, from primary schools, middle schools and universities, to conduct field studies of wild animals and plants, and to gather specimens.

Mountain Python National Forest Park

Mountain Python National Forest Park is situated in the east of Ming Tombs reservoir of Changping district, about 40 kilometers from Beijing, and is the largest national forest park in Beijing. Because the mountain range winds like a huge python, its name therefore came into being.

Python National Forest Park boasts four astonishing landscapes. First, there is a variety of plants in the mountain, totaling 176 kinds, and the forest coverage is as high as 86%. In spring, flowers are everywhere on the mountains, in autumn, the leaves of smoke trees turn red, producing an astonishingly good mountain landscape. Second, there is the largest stone Buddha statue in north China, greeting visitors from near and far. Third, there is the longest mountain ladders in Beijing, totaling 3,666 steps made of stone slabs. Fourth, there is the highest pagoda atop of the mountain in Beijing and the painted long corridor, offering a distant view of Beijing.

The park has over a dozen tourist attractions as the place where Deng Xiaoping planted trees, the cultural stele forest, the python-watching platform and the flower garden. And in the nearby areas, there are also sightseeing orchards and restaurants where visitors can taste fresh fruits and local flavor dishes. In the 1980s, Deng Xiaoping, Wan Li, Hu Yaobang and other first generation state leaders came to this site to plantlacebark pines and Chinese pines, and nowadays, these trees have matured and are flourishing. In the park, the “Green Culture Memorial Pavilion”, 100 Green Cultural Stele Carvings from celebritiesbears inscriptions by top Party and government leaders, Chinese and foreign celebrities and renowned calligraphers.

Mountain Bodhisattva Scenic Spot

Mountain Bodhisattva Scenic Spot is located in the southwest part of Changping District.It is a scenic spot focusing on summit and Buddhist culture. In 2002, it was opened to the public.

The scenic spot covers an area of four square kilometers, with a tourist line of 5.8 kilometers. It belongs to the mountain range of Mountain Taihang. The villages at the foot of the mount have a history of 1,000 years, with many sites the of Ming and Qing Dynasties. There are stretching mountains and peaks, towering old trees, scattered rare flowers and grasses, rampant fruit trees, clear springs and fresh air, thus it is reputed as “natural oxygen bar”. More than 100 kinds of wild animals such as spotted deer, hare, roe, badger, squirrel, berghaan, pied magpie, and woodpecker, etc live in the scenic area. While worshipping the Bodhisattva Palace and Guan Di Temple, tourists believing in Buddhism can also see the four great wonders of nature: Natural Grand Stone Buddha, Thousand-meter Reclined Mountain Bodhisattva, Big Character of Buddha, and Natural Stone Buddha Hand. In addition, there are more than 40 scenic spots such as Loving Mother Courtyard, Saint Water Spring, Loyalty and Piety Spring, Thousand-year Locust Tree, Dragon Gate Aspen, Military Strategy Stone, Yinxin Stone, Five-color Rock, Rock of Pagoda Tree Spitting out Stone, Brothers' Post, Stage for Worshipping Buddha, and Bodhisattva Stage, etc. Tourists who love climbing can do some exercises and hold mountain climbing contest here. In different seasons, on can appreciate mountain flowers and beautiful sceneries, dig out seasonal potherbs, as well as pick wild fruits such as acid jujube, hawkthorn, Chinese small apple, walnut seed, persimmon, mountain apricot, and mountain peach, etc. There are root carving exhibition hall and folk custom garden in the scenic spot. 2.68 meters in height, 3.8 meters in width and 1.16 meters in thickness, the “Nine Dragons Playing with a Pearl” carved on camphor wood is the largest root carving in China.

Mountain Miaofeng Scenic Area

Mountain Miaofeng Scenic Area is located in Mentougou District of Beijing along the No.109 state highway, at the conjunction area of Haidian, Changping and Mentougou districts in Beijing, and is about 55 kilometers from downtown Beijing.

The scenic area is known for its ancient temples, weird pine trees and rocks, and the main peak of the mountain is 1,291 meters above sea level, and this is the highest peak standing closest to Beijing. In the scenic area, there are numerous weird rocks and ancient trees; there are rich biological resources, with the forest coverage at more than 90%. This area is one of the key regions for the protection of biological diversity in the Beijing area, and there is also a huge rose plantation, with an area of about 10,000 mu (660 hectares), the largest in north China.

Mountain Miaofeng (the Huiji Temple) hosts the largest traditional temple fair in north China, and this tradition started in the Ming Dynasty and is still preserved nowadays. During the temple fair each year (April 1-15 on the lunar calendar), hundreds of thousands of devotees from across the country flock to the Buddhist temple to worship and offer sacrifices, and hundreds of folk performances are staged during this period, and the scene is very spectacular each year. Mountain Miaofeng is named the birth place of China's folk customs and culture and is known as the cradle of China's folklore, and in 2005, a China folk customs stele was erected at Mountain Miaofeng to mark its contribution.
