| | Badachu Park [edit this] | | Badachu Park, located at the southern foot of picturesque West Mountain of Beijing, is a national class-AAAA scenic tourism area, one of the first group of major historic sites under provincial protection and an exquisite park in Beijing. With a long history and rich Buddhist temple atmosphere, Badachu Park is a modern metropolitan mountain park, which is the nearest to the city center.
At Badachu Park, it is warm in the winter without strong wind, and is cool and comfortable in the summer. The eight ancient temples were constructed respectively in the Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasties, and after repairs and reconstructions throughout the history, the ancient architectures of these temples are still well-preserved today. There are three places most worth visiting in Badachu Park. The first one is the Temple of Divine Light. At the temple, there are the towering pagoda with the tooth relics of Buddha hidden in it, the time-honored base of the Thousand-Buddhist-Statues Pagodafrom the Liao Dynasty, golden fish pond, the huge “Arhat wall” and the “Heart Sutra wall.” The second is the Temple of Great Compassion. Inside the Mahavira Hall of the temple, there are the vivid statues of the 18 Arhats carved by Liu Yuan, a renowned sculptor in the Yuan Dynasty. The third is the Temple of Fragrant World, with complete sets of Buddhist statues and offering devices. The most famous are the two steles with dragon heads and tortoise bases, which bear the inscriptions by three emperors of the Qing Dynasty—Kangxi, Qianlong and Jiaqing.
Badachu Park organizes two large-scale traditional tourism and cultural activities each year—the Badachu China Gardens' Tea Culture Festival in spring, and the Badachu Mountain-Climbing Festival on the Double ninth Day on the lunar calendar in autumn. | Edit by: Dorothy
| Ancient Cliff House [edit this] | | Ancient Cliff House is located in the valley to the northwest of Yanqing County. It is now the largest cliff residence site found in North China.
The ancient cliff houses were digged by some unknown ancestors on steep cliffs. There are altogether 147 stone rooms, divided into front, middle and rear parts, hanging on the cliffs of about 100,000 square meters. The stones rooms have various shapes and positions. In the shape of square or rectangle, some big rooms are about 20 square meters, while some small ones are about three to four square meters. Some have single rooms, while some have two or three rooms; the flats have parallel rooms or rooms in two layers. All stone rooms are distributed in different layers, with stone steps, stone stairs and plank roads connecting each other. There are complete sets of life facilities including doors, windows, Kang (heatable adobe bed), kitchen ranges, mangers, closets, flues, and storage rooms. The windows are usually two to three square chi (one third of a meter). The doors are in different sizes. The four corners of windows and doors all have symmetrical holes of axis. Sinks are cut in the front eaves, maybe for the purpose of fetching water. These stone rooms have different functions. Some are bedrooms, some look like kitchen, and some seem to be used for raising horses. There are two kinds of stone kang. One is directly dug on the granite, without smoke chimney under it; another is curved, with stone slate or adobes on it. There are kitchen ranges dug on one side of the stone kang, with twisted smoke chimneys leading to the outside of the stone rooms. One stone house is a typical “three-room” apartment. One big room with door looks like the parlor; the room on the right side is the kitchen, with stone kitchen range and smoke channel; the room on the left side has a closet. “Guantangzi” is typical of all the stone rooms, which is in the middle of the mountain range, like a palace in ancient times. It is not only high and spacious and has a good daylighting, but also has delicate carvings. There are four stone pillars supporting the roof of the cave. In the middle of the four pillars, there is a wide Buddha niche, with two small bedrooms dug on both sides. The stone rooms here are complicated in structure and delicate in design. There is no accurate record about its age, history, background and usage, so it is still a myth. | Edit by: Dorothy
| Anding Yulin Ancient Mulberry Garden [edit this] | | Located to the east of Anding Town of Daxing District, Anding Yulin Ancient Mulberry Garden is 45 kilometers away from the downtown, and 20 kilometers away from Langfang in Hebei. It is a comprehensive garden for agricultural sightseeing and popular science. It was opened in 2002.
It was said that mulberry trees were grown in Anding Town during the period of the Eastern Han Dynasty, and there have been almost 2,000 years of history. It owns the largest and unique ancient mulberry garden in North China. “An Outline Treatise of Medical Herbs” records that mulberry invigorates the liver and the kidney, enriches the blood and improves eyesight. Traditional Chinese medicine deems that the mulberry is sweet in taste but cold in nature, so it has the effects of quenching thirst and invigorating liver and kidney. Mulberry is reputed as “magic tree in the east” and mulberry enjoys the fame of “king of fruits”.
The ancient mulberry garden is located in the ancient Wuding River (now Yongding River) sand plain, where sands are clean with good ventilation property, suitable for the growth of mulberry trees. The garden covers an area of 23,333 square meters. There are 446 old trees in the garden, and more than 35,000 newly planted mulberry trees. The “mulberry tree king”, almost one meter in diameter of breast height and about 25 meters in the diameter of the crown, is producing 400 kilograms to 500 kilograms of mulberries each year. At present, the old tree is listed by Beijing Forestry Bureau as Grade 2 protected ancient tree. In 2004, the mulberry here passed the authentication of organic food in Beijing. In 2006, large-scale outdoor activities for youngsters are introduced, forming the landscapes such as mulberry cultural corridor, appreciating moon on the mulberry stage, mulberry sea, paths in mulberry forests, fish jumping over the gully, and flower garden, etc. In the middle of each May when mulberry picking festival is held, it becomes a good place for citizens to pick mulberry, spending vacations and experiencing folk customs. | Edit by: Dorothy
