Longxian Palace Scenic Area

  [edit this]

Longxian Palace Scenic Area is located in Longquan Temple Valley in Dongguan Village, Zhangfang Town in Fangshan District of Beijing, and neighbors Fairy Dwelling Cave. This cave is 510 meters above sea level, 100 kilometers from downtown Beijing, and 15 kilometer in the north of Yidu of Shidu Scenic Area. Tourists may take the train along Beijing-Taiyuan Railway to Sanhezhuang Station, and go two kilometers to the north until their arrival. Out of the cave stand dense mountain peak. Longmenjian Canyon

  [edit this]

Longmenjian Canyon, about 90 kilometers from downtown Beijing, occupies an area of about 20 square kilometers and is 15 kilometers long. The canyon zigzags among the forested mountains and is known for its weird-shaped stones and steep cliffs, strangely-formed peaks and caves, lush grass and crystal water.

In the canyon, the air is fresh and cool, and people will feel much refreshed there. Because the Longmenjian Canyon has steep cliffs and narrow gorges, the relative height difference ranging from 300 to 600 meters from the peaks to the canyon bottom and the narrowest section of the canyon at less than four meters. It is humid all year round and dampness is not easy to disperse, leading to lush vegetation. The content of negative oxygen ion is high, about 400-500 times higher than that in urban areas, and it is therefore a natural oxygen bar. Due to its special landform, temperature here is 7-8 degrees centigrade lower than that in urban areas. Even in the baking summer season, it is cool here. The road extends with relatively flat slopes and it is therefore not exhausting to climb up the mountains.

Longmenjian belongs to the karst landform. The erosion of rocks is slow, the frost wedging in the rock layers is stronger than the erosion effect, it is therefore called the “cream of karst in north China.” Because it is located at the edge of the Yanhecheng great fault zone, after the orogenic movement about 150 million years ago, water flow cut into and eroded the soft rocks, and the Longmenjian Canyon was gradually developed, with numerous gorges and ravines and more than 170 different waterfalls. Water in the canyon is quality mineral water, containing several trace elements needed by the human body. The green mountains, crystal water and canyon together produce a southern China landscape, and every bend of the canyon is like a water color painting. The canyon is nicknamed “small Guilin in western Beijing” and “lesser three gorges in Beijing”.

Longqing Gorge

  [edit this]

Longqing Gorge is located to the north of Yanqing County, about 80 kilometers from the downtown. Opened in 1987, it now receives about 800,000 tourists annually.

The scenic spot stretches for seven kilometers, with the water surface 30 to 50 meters in width. As one of the three grand gorges in the suburbs of Beijing, it is reputed as “small Three-Gorges” and “small Li River”. There are steep cliffs on both sides of it, and the mouth is blocked by a dam, which is a reinforced steel double-arc dam 72 meters in height and 90 meters in length. The dam can hold 8.5 million cubic meters of water and the surface covers an area of 340,000 square meters. When the reservoir is full, the water will flow out of the spillways on the side holes, dive down and form the grandiose falls. On both ends of the dam, there is a tunnel. The south tunnel is about 300 meters long, leading to the outside of the mountains. The north tunnel is about 100 meters long, leading to the north slipway. Built on the steep cliffs and at a length of 258 meters, Tenglong elevator is the channel to enter the interior sights of Longqing Gorge. It is the largest outdoor rolling elevator in the shape of dragon in Asia. By taking the elevator, the tourists can reach the yacht dock where one can go by water to enter Longqing Gorge. The sceneries in the gorge are beautiful, with clear water, steep cliffs, strange stones, and numerous peaks, stone pricks, stone swords, stone pillars and caves, etc. Longqing Gorge is both spectacular like mountains in the north, and gorgeous like sceneries in the south. The main sceneries include more than 40 views such as Smoky Trees in Ancient City, Grandiose Dam, Statue of Buddha, Niche of Thousand Buddha Statues, Celestial Beings Playing Chess, Ancient Tree, Ancient Temple of Vajra, Phoenix Coronet Island, Heaven Emperor's Roof, Celestial Being's Courtyard, Hundred Flower Cave, etc. Longqing Gorge is cool in summer, and the temperature is about six degrees lower than that of the downtown of Beijing, 0.8 degrees lower than Chengde Mountain Resort. It is cold in winter, with a long period of freezing. Since 1987, the Ice Lamp Festival is held during the period from January to the end of February. Till now altogether 20 festivals have been successfully held. It is one of the earliest and largest ice lamp artistic exhibitions in our country, at the lowest latitude compared to other places where ice lamp festivals are held. There are near 200 yachts, among which 35 are environment friendly gas yachts, and more than 150 small boats. It receives 180,000 tourists every day. There are also complete sets of board and lodging facilities.

The main attractions including:

Mountain Cockscomb: It is also called Peak of Unique Beauty, or Phoenix Coronet Island. The mountain is surrounded by water in three directions. The height drop from the top of the mountain to the water surface is about 70 meters, looking like a lying cock. It is a symbolic view of Longqing Gorge.

Celestial Beings' Courtyard: It is on the highest peak in the scenic spot, about 200 meters away from the surface. There is an ancient pine tree in the courtyard, at a height of 24.7 meters, and with a breast diameter of 0.6 meters, and an age of about 300 years. The celestial beings' courtyard is divided into the upper and lower yards, namely Heaven Emperor's House and Deity Tea House.

Hundred Flower Cave: It is 320 meters long. The exhibition area covers 3,000 square meters. There are 1,650 types of planted flowers, grasses, and trees, with birds and other animals living in it. It includes the sceneries of Garden of Flowers, Tropical Rainforests, Natural Sceneries in the North, landscape of the south of the Yangtze River, Flowers Praying to the Phoenix, etc.

Lao She Teahouse

  [edit this]

Lao She Teahouse, located on the southwest of Tiananmen Square, is named after Lao She, a renowned writer known as “people's artist”.

It was created in 1988 bysome zhiqings (“educated young people” sent to rural areas for “reeducation” during the Cultural Revolution) who had returned to Beijing led by Yin Shenxi, a pioneer reformer of commerce in Beijing. Today the teahouse has become a comprehensive cultural enterprise which blends Chinese opera, food, tea, and Beijing culture, and which features various forms of teahouses found in old Beijing, such as the plain teahouse, the teahouse-restaurant, the roadside tea stall, and the teahouse with story tellers.

The three-story teahouse has a business area of 2,600 square meters. The Qianmen Sihe Teahouse on the second floor follows the layout of Siheyuan (Quadrangle Dwelling) in Beijing, and combines the styles of north and south China. Whereas the main house follows the traditional style, the wing rooms are of varied designs, blending traditional art and modern technology. Lush grass and singing birds add to its natural gracefulness and liveliness.

Every day, in the theatre on the third floor you may watch performances of traditional folk arts, such as Peking opera, folk shows, acrobatic, magic, and face switching. The shows are accompanied by such refreshments as famous kinds of tea, court and local snacks, and Beijing-style delicacies. In the east of the third floor is the “Big-bowl Tea” Restaurant, which offers old-Beijing cuisine, specially fashioned tea-accompanying dishes, and “tea banquet”.

Since its open, Lao She Teahouse has received 47 foreign leaders, wives of ambassadors from over 40 countries, a number of celebrities, and over 3 million tourists from home and abroad. It has become a special window to Chinese culture and a tie of friendship between China and other countries of the world.
