Chongqing City is regarded as “Mountain City”, located in the southeastern part of the Sichuan Basin and the junction of the Yangtze River and Jialing River. It was the only municipality directly under the central government in China's western region, and the only marked big city of the four Chinese ones in the map of the world, which hoisted in the halls of the United Nations.
During the year 1189, Emperor Guangzong of the Song Dynasty was first conferred as “King Gong”, the governor of Gong District, and soon succeeded the throne, which he considered as “Double Happy Events”. As a celebration, he advanced Gong District to Chongqing Prefecture, which is the derivation of the name.
During the Anti-Japanese War, Chongqing is the Peidu of the Nationalist government. In March 1997, the Fifth Session of the Eighth National People's Congress approved the establishment of Chongqing municipality directly under the central government.
Chongqing City is the birthplace of Bayu culture and has a 3000-year history, called “Ba” in ancient times. It is characteristic of landscape of mountain ciyt, commemorative sites of revolution, historical sites of the Anti-Japanese War, city gardens, scenes of cultural interest, and nature reserves. It blends the Bayu culture with natural scenery and comprises, hills, waters, forests, springs, falls, canyons and caves.
