At the northwest corner of the former city area of Anyang on the ruins of the Tianning Temple stands the Wenfeng Pagoda which was originally named the Pagoda of the Tianning Temple. It was later named “Wenfeng” for its special location and the customs of the local area.

Wenfeng Pagoda is famous for its unique style of structure. Just on the contrary to the ususal form of common Pagodas, it is wider and wider from the bottom to the top, looking like an umbrella, unique in style both at home and abroad. Wenfeng Pagoda is 38.65 meters tall while the perimeter of the Pagoda foundation is 40 meters long. It has brick Pagoda body and wood eaves. The octagonal body of the Pagoda standing on the round lotus-like foundations of seven floors interlacing with each other and extending both to the left and right enhances the solidity and beauty of the Pagoda.

The upper body of the Pagoda has five levels of extruding eaves, the higher the level, the bigger in size. The extruding eaves supported by artistic bricks are different from each other in structures. The brass bells hung ove the tips of the octagonal eaves ring and echo along the wind, making clear pleasant sounds.

The bottom floor of the Pagoda has arch doors on each side among which only the one facing south is the real gate accessible while all the others are just for decoration with patterns of lotuses, dragons, etc. On the upper frame of the door are bricks inscribed with vivid traditional Chinese pattern of “two dragons coiling around a huge pearl”. The octagonal Pagoda is splendid in view, with supporting columns of embossment of lifelike coiling dragons.

On the eight sides of the brick Pagoda above the door as well as on the intervals of the eight colums with carves of dragons are eight embossed buddhist stories describing the affairs of buddha and showing their divine statues, vivid in patten and lifelike in expressions, considered as one of the rare valuables of ancient brick carving artworks.

Tourists can step up into the Pagoda by the platform of 2 meters tall at the bottom entry facing south, and reach the top after 72 coiling steps. At the very center of the Pagoda top erects a jar-like Tasha (the symbol of the pagoda) which is 10 meters tall, unique in form all over the country. Around the top is a wall of battlement which is more than 1 meter in height. The top platform has a capacity of 200 people. Looking far into the distance on the top, you'll enjoy the beautiful view of Anyang, the ancient modern city.

Wenfeng Pagoda, the highest building in Anyang till the middle 1980s, has always been the simbol of Anyang for all those dynasties.

Situated in the southeast corner of the Tangyin County, and covering more than 6,000 square meters, the Yue Fei Temple was first built in 1450 (Ming Dynasty). Composed of more than 100 halls and rooms, it also has more than 40 colorful statues and more than 300 steles and inscriptions of celebrities of many dynasties. Vigorous and majestic, it is an ancient construction cluster well-perserved.

Yue Fei, born in the Tangyin County, is a national hero much admired in the history of China. Visitors can easily find the huge brass statue built on a granite base immediately after they reach the railway station in Tangyin County.

As one of the many ruins related with Yue Fei in Tangyin County, the Temple of Yue Fei stands in the dowmtown area. It is still unknown about the exact time when it was first built. The temple we now see was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty in 1450. Composed of nearly 100 halls and rooms, it covers more than 4,000 square meters. Jingzhongfang (literally “the Tower of Devotion and Loyalty”), an elegant tower of wood sturcture, is the first establishment of the temple. On the two walls standing at the side are the huge Chinese characters of “Loyalty” and “Fealty”, each of which is 1.8 meters tall. Stepping over the threshold into the hall, five iron statues of the five murders who killed Yue Fei can be immediately found kneeling down with a huge brass statue with angry eyes and wading sword standing upright behind them, rich in crushing power.

Born in a farmer's family, Yue Fei was a famous militarist, a great General in fightings against Jin invaders from the north of China. He was intelligent since young and was fond of reading. He also practiced Chinese martial art when young and joined the army when he was 20 years old. On his back was a tatoo that read “Loyal and Devoted to the Nation” made by his mother. Yue Fei made great victories in all his six battles against the Jin invaders. However, what Emperor Gaozong of the South Song Dynasty and his Prime Minister Qinhui wanted was the shameful compromise. They gave him 12 orders in succession to stop him by asking him to retreat his army and depriving him of his position. He was only 39 years old when he was executed later for being given a possible accusal. People of his native land greatly admired him while hating those treacherous officials such as Qinhui.

Besides the two pavillions in the east court and the west court, there are more than 300 steles in honor of Yue Fei standing like evergreen trees within the temple, making a large archive of calligraphy and literature in central China. Walking through the Yimen Gate and looking northward under the Yubei Pavilion, one will find the majestic Great Hall standing in front of you. It is a splendid building of 10 meters tall. The vivid colorful statue of Yue Fei sits in the center of the hall, with great dignity. The huge gold plaque hanging over the statue reads “Give Back the Land”.

Wing-rooms on the east and west side are for the exhibition of the daily life and experiences of Yue Fei. The backyard hall is the living room of Yue Fei where Chushibiao (The Letter to the Emperor before the March of the Army), a famous calligraphy artwork of Yue Fei is shown here. Behind the living hall are serval other palaces for his relatives, etc.

Situated on the open field 4km to the downtown area of Tangyin County between the Youhe River and Tanghe River, Youlicheng, the first national prison where Emperor Wenwang of the Zhou Dynasty was once imprisoned, is the origin place of The Book of Changes, which is laurelled as an encyclopedia of the world. Famous both domestic and overseas for its vast cultural connotations, Youlicheng is now a science palace admired by people worshiping ancient prophets, studying The Book of Changes and trying to put it into practical use.

Based on Historical Records, Emperor Zhou who had been cruel, fatuous, incompetent and extravagant, the last emperor of the Shang Dynasty, encountered common resentment while King Jichang in the west was on the rise. This incurred jealousy and anxiety of the Emperor Zhou. So he found a pretext and got Jichang jailed in Youli, where Jichang spent seven years in writing The Book of Changes, and expressed in it his na?ve dialectic views on contradictions and changes. This is the famous story about the creation of The Book of Changes. So, people of later generations built temples to memorize Jichang, also called Wenwang, on the ruins of Youlicheng.

The Wenwang Temple built on the ruins of Youlicheng facing south were rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty (1542 A.D.). There is a green-blue stone memorial arch at the south end of the platorm on which were inscribed “Yanyifang”. One of the two steles standing at the front gate on both sides has six large Chinese characters meaning “Youlicheng of Wenwang”.

Stepping upward, visitors will be greeted by the maject gate of the monastery behind which ancient cypresses can be found everywhere in the courtyard of the temple. The platform of Yanyitai can be found in the west part of the courtyard where Jichang was imprisoned according to the stroy. The platform built on stone and brick foundation more than 1 meter tall is 13 meters in height, composed of 2 floors, each of which has 3 rooms.

There are lots of steles in the courtyard, on which poems, prose, essays written by emperors, ministries, and scholars in honor of Wenwang can be found. The most famous one among them is the stele named “Yijing by Wenwang”, the words inscribed on which are very important materials for the study of The Book of Changes.
