Fahai Temple

  [edit this]

Fahai Temple is situated on the southwestern extensions of Mountain Monkey, northeast of Jingziguan Township. The name of the temple means limitlessness of Buddhism.

According to the inscriptions on the temple tablets, it was built by Master Xifeng in 667 and rebuilt by Master Taixu in the middle of the Ming Dynasty. At the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, it had been wrecked twice. In 1659 and 1666, the temple had undergone renovations. The Grand Hall and the Eastern and Western Zen Meditation Halls were restored in the years of Emperor Qianlong and Emperor Jiaqing. The Baiyi Tower suffered two wrecks in 1859 and 1864 and later was repaired.

The temple covers an area of 6,700m2. There are 24 buildings among which are 3 gates, 5 grand halls and 5 inner halls. Mainly brick-wood structures, the architectures are laid out in a simple and graceful manner.

With mountain cliffs on its back, there are two springs running from both sides to gather in front of the temple. Deep into the bamboo garden on one side, there is lively Baling Spring which makes a waterfall after running out of the garden. In the cave of the cliff before the temple, a colorful variety of rocks are scattered everywhere. There used to be a lot of naturally formed Buddha statues in the cave, so it was called the Cave of Thousands of Buddha. It is recorded on the remaining 8 tablets that the two historic sights, Fahai Temple and Xiangyan Temple (the other famous temple along the Dan River) are the two gems along the Dan River.

The drifting starts from the Fuziya Power Station in Junmahe Township, Xixia County.

The Laoguanhe River, 42km away from Xixia County seat, flows through No.311 National Highway and No.48 Provincial Highway. As the source of the Dan River, it serves as an important water resources conservation area in the Middle Route Project of South-North Water Transfer. The river is 38km long, among which 12km can be used for drifting. The general drop of the river is 1,340m and there is a drop of over 480m in drifting sections. In total it takes around 2 hours to finish the whole drifting journey. As an exiting program in He'nan Province, which is the earliest in development, longest in distance and the largest in size, Laoguan River drifting is reputed as “No.1 Drifting in He'nan”.

Along the river there are many sights such as Jiulong Shoal which features 18 minor Shoals like Lying Dragon, Dragon Chair, and so on. While enjoying drifting, splashing water is another pleasure. People tend to splash water at each other as a greeting. When it comes to the sections where currents are not so swift, you can swim in the clear river.

Affected by the continental climate of the tropical monsoon zone, rainfalls mainly come from May to October. The average rainfall stands at 800mm. There are some parts as wide as 30m and others as narrow as 5m along the river. The swift current, dangerous shoals and deep and smooth lakes make the river an ideal place for drifting.

Along a total of 19 drifting sections, one can enjoy himself to the heart's content. In the scenic area, there are abundant vegetations such as ginkgoes which is called living fossil, Chinese Buckeye and so on.

During the drifting, a guard will be on your side to take care of you. A series of service items such as the complete set of drifting facilities, guides and insurances, are available for your kind use.
