Located in the mountainous area in the north of Neixiang County, at the eastern part of Mountain Qinling and southern part of Mountain Funiu, the Baotianman Nature Reserve Area covers an area of 100km2.
It is the first nature reserve area in He'nan Province and the only biosphere reserve area in central China. Other honors it has been awarded include the National Ecological Demonstration Area, National Geo-park, National Youth Science Education Base and so on. The imposing mountains and vast virgin forests lend the place colorful resources as well as beautiful sceneries, all of which have made it the centre of ecological diversity in He'nan Province and the best preserved area at same latitudes.
Lying in the transitional edge from the second-level terrace to the third-level terrace in the country, the place, 1,830m above the sea level, is the highest part of the south-eastern extensions of Mountain Funiu. Guarding the north-western cold snap off and trapping the warm-humid currents from subtropical regions, the place is typical of a transitional climate from northern subtropical zone to warm temperate zone. It is a fertile land with a unique ecological environment, which boasts of rich vegetation resources and a forest coverage amounting to 95.8%. There are many rare and old species living here. In the reserve area, there are 2,911 species of plants, covering 80% of the total in He'nan. As the place where inhabit the most concentrating and abundant species in He'nan, 29 of them are national key protection species and 52 are categorized as rare and peculiar wild plants. Of the 201 land vertebrate species in the reserve, there are 25 kinds of national key protection animals, such as leopards, Golden Eagles, giant salamanders and Golden Pheasants. Numerous dinosaur eggs and fossils in the neighborhood indicate the reserve has an old geological history which best represents the structure of Mountain Qinling.
Among all the beautiful natural landscapes, the cliffs and rocks of different shapes could be seen everywhere, such as the deep and steep Saozhou Cliff, Jingziduo, Guofeng Cliff, Muhuding, Huashijian and so on. Standing on the main peak with a height of 1,830m above the sea level, one can have a panoramic view of the attraction. In 3,000 hectares of the virgin forest belt, various plants grow and thrive here.
