The Vessel Casting Place of Huangdi (Emperor Yellow) is located in the Yangping Township of Lingbao City, 80km away from Sanmenxia City. It is recorded in the book of The Record of History that at this place Huangdi cast cooking vessels here to worship Heaven and establish his rule. The political, economic and cultural center then, the place now is where China Ancient Altar lies and the largest ruins of the Yangshao Culture remains can be found in China.

Here stands the Huangdi Mausoleum with a height of 300m and extends to 5,000m long. To the west lies a hillock, 6m high and 42.5m in perimeter, which is said to be the burial mound of the emperor. To the southwest lies Longxugou, which is the legendary place where the dragon beards fell down from the sky. In the neighborhood grows Longxucao, a kind of herb which is said to have come from the dragon beards.

Located between Hanguguan Pass and Tongguan Pass on the Old Chang'an Path, the place has been wrecked repeatedly through wars. A continuance of renovations and restorations has been done throughout history. Currently the main sights include Xin Hall, Shizu Hall, Long Corridor, tomb, pavilions. Three bronze cauldrons were built to represent heaven, Earth and mankind.

Since its opening in 1994, the attraction has been a tourism resort for overseas Chinese to seek their roots, commemorate the ancestors, appreciate the Huangdi Culture and explore the origin of Chinese civilizations.

Located to the northeast of Sammenxia City, 14km away from the city, the Sanmenxia Dam Scenic Area is a state tourist area of Grade AAA. The dam, standing upon what is called “Golden Delta of the West of Henan”, is the first large water conservancy project along the Yellow River.

The project began on April 13th, 1957 and was completed in October, 1960. The primary structure is a concrete gravity dam, with a total length of 713.2m and the maximum height of 106m. The secondary dam is an embankment dam with a reinforced concrete core, which is 144m long and has the maximum height of 24m.The power station, a low-head stream-flow hydroelectric plant, is located to the rear of the dam. It is 223.88m long and 26.2m wide. 8 generator sets can be installed and the present 7 sets have a power output of 400,000 kilowatts. Sanmenxia Dam, the largest ever dam project in China, had attracted global attention. Renovations have been made to the project so that the deposit has been reduced and a balance was achieved of silt coming in and out of the reservoir. The project has realized many functions such as flood control, ice prevention, irrigation, power generation, and water supply. 91.5% of the drainage area of the Yellow River is now under its control. In one generation alone, one of the functions of the project had paid back all the investment by 1986.

Thanks to the dam, from October to next June when the reservoirs begin to store water, the Yellow River water passing here shapes a beautiful lake. Covering an area of 200km2, the lake stretches 100km long from the dam to Dayu Ferry in the Shanxi Province. From June to October every year when the flood discharge is done, raging waves and thunderous noise make a spectacular scene.

The dam, a symbol of the national character of China, stands firmly among the terrifying waves. Other places of interests include the Old Yellow River Plank Road, Zhanggong Island, Shuzhang Terrace, Dayu Park, Yingbin Pavilion, Sanmenxia Museum and the Sino-Japan Friendship Garden. All of these attractions, related to the dam in one way or another, have formed a group featuring the old Yellow River Culture. The contrasting views among different seasons have made it an ideal place for travel, recreation and summer escape.

Located in the Shanzhou Scenic Area, the Pagoda of Baolun Temple was originally a pagoda in the Baolun Temple of Shanzhou City. Back in the Tang Dynasty, it was built by Master Dao Xiu, and in 1177, Master Zhi Xiu had it rebuilt. As 800 years have passed, the temple is no more and only the pagoda remains.

A 13-storey brick pagoda, it stands 25.5m long and has a perimeter of 21.6m. The bottom part consists of a base and a pedestal. In the front, there is an inscription meaning a pagoda where Buddha's remains are kept. An inverted taper tower, the height on each storey descends evenly. The outline of the pagoda takes on the shape of a parabola. On each storey, there are semi-annular doors, recesses, and wickets built into the walls, and the corners are decorated with wind chimes. Inside the pagoda are the stairway and rooms where one can look far into distance and enjoy the views.

While having a look of a Tang-styled architecture, the inside structure was built with the methods of the Song Dynasty. The pagoda blends the artistic features and construction of the two periods and has a unique shape. Owing to this special structure, the pagoda has survived 16 earthquakes, four of which were destructive to the surrounding areas. Standing several meters away from the pagoda, one can hear the toads croaking on the rocks and therefore, it is nicknamed the Toad Tower.

It is said that there were a couple of golden toads in the pagoda, so loud the sound was that nothing else could be heard. Later a monk stole the male away and only the female was left. Ever since, the toads' croaking was not as loud as before. As a matter of fact, the croaking mystery can be explained by echoes. The pagoda is ranked as the number four echo architecture in china, and it is a key relic preservation unit of the He'nan Province.

Situated to the south of Shanxian County in Sanmenxia City, Mountain Ganshan National Forest Park is only 30km away from the city, a drive of 40 minutes. With a total area of 3,800 hectares and an elevation of 1,884m, the attraction boasts of its seasonal views and abundant natural resources. The irresistible temptations of vacation and recreation, above all, an experience of nature has made the place a certain option.

The long history has left here many places of cultural interests and beautiful legends. The major sights include Wangxiang Terrace, Tiewa Temple, Sheshen Cliff, Lazhong Ditch, Mawuzhai Village, Hudie Valley, Jinji Ridge.

There are abundant vegetation resources in the park. Among 1,500 species of plants, a 1,000-year-old live oak, the oldest one, is still flourishing; a giant poplar aged 500 years, has won the title of No.1 Poplar in Henan. Interestingly, a hole in the tree can hold four people for a card game. Over 110 species of wild animals in the park have maintained the ecological balance and added life to the beautiful mountain such as leopards, antelopes and spotted deer.

Thanks to its high forest coverage of over 95%, Mountain Ganshan has earned a good reputation as a natural oxygen bar. In the seasons of spring and summer, it is vernal green all over the mountain. In summers, with a temperature 7℃, it is absolutely worth a trip for urban people. A 40 minutes bus ride will keep you away from the summer heat. Among its 84 peaks, Ganlu Peak, the highest, has a height of 1,884.8m above sea level. Other famous peaks include Yucui Peak, Luohan Peak, Juxian Peak, and Guangwu Peak. Standing on Ganlu peak, one can have a bird's eye view of all the beautiful scenery in the area. Far into the distance, one can see the vague shapes of Sanmenxia City and the Yellow River.

In 2004, an ethnic village was built in the park. Every day the folk dance & song performances, like the Peacock dance and the Biaoniu dance are performed by ethnical minorities such as the Dai, Aini, Yao, Wa, Kayan of Myanmar peoples. Besides, there are national costumes and handicraft products displayed.

The golden autumn is the best season of the place. During late September and October, the mountain is fiery red with maple leaves. When winter comes, it is shrouded in white snow.

Butterfly Valley, a paradise where 156 kinds of butterflies live, is no doubt the most famous sight of Mountain Ganshan tour. From June to August every year, you will see the wonderful scene of a colorful array of butterflies dancing around in the valley.

The vernal green, vast woods, clear water, red maples, steep peaks have constituted the amazing views of Mountain Ganshan in all seasons.
