| | [edit this] | | The Orange Island is otherwise known as “Juzhou Island” and “Shuilu Island”, located in the midstream of the Xiangjiang River in Changsha City, one of the fluvial alluvions in the lower reaches of the Xiangjiang River.
The island's shape is a long island, which faces Mountain Yuelu on the west and Changsha City on the east, surrounded by water and extending ten li with its narrow parts being about 40 meters and the widest being about 140 meters.
The island is a famous in-river land in China, also the world's longest inland river island. Since the island's product, the orange, was well-known, it was named Orange Island. Its beauty and historical accumulation have been recorded in the ancient time, in the Song Dynasty here is one of the Eight Views of Hu'nan——the Snow-covered Island in the River. The island has been a popular site for summer vacation for a long time as “there is no hot weather even in May and June.” In Mao Zedong's youth he spent a lot of time walking on the beach, swimming and sunbathing.
Now the Orange Island is a park, where the great majority of the residents, the orange trees, offer the tourists with their sweet fruit in every harvest season. In the park there is a grand white marble monument, on which there are two seal cuttings: four Chinese characters “Orange Island” and a classical Chinese poem “QinYuanChun. Changsha”, they are both Mao Zedong's works. At the both sides of the island middle part there are swimming beaches and the N-S street is convenient. Changsha Government is going to improve this place to be a more attractive sightseeing destination, which will integrate gardening, traveling, entertainment, sports, culture and commerce. In the plan, the area will be divided into Two Corridors and Seven Garden: Hu'nan Culture Corridor, On-water Amusement Corridor, Orange Garden, Garden of the Nature, Park of Harmonious Guests, Plaza of Shopping and Foods, GYM Center, Relaxation Resort and Wildlife Park. | Edit by: ch | |
