| | Traditional Miao Building above Tuo River [edit this] | | The Miao traditional building complex locates in the southeast of Fenghuang County. One side of the complex connects ancient government built path and another part is right above the Tuo River.
The entire complex is 240m long. It was built during the period from the end of Qing Dynasty and beginning of the Republic of China. It has strong characteristics of Miao nationality. | South Great Wall of China [edit this] | | South Great Wall of China is located in Fenghuang County with a history of 300 years. It was part of the Great Wall of Ming Dynasty and called “Miao's Border Fronties” whose fortification, military organization and soldier system were the same as that of the North Wall. | Dehang Scenic Area [edit this] | | Dehang Scenic Area is located in the west suburb of Jishou City of Xiangxi. Dehang is Miao language, which means beautiful valley. Here strange mountains and stones are raising superbly, the rook and river are bickering in the deep valley, the waterfall is hanging in the sky, the old trees are reaching the sky and the colorful flowers and grass are booming. | Former Residence of Shen Congwen [edit this] | | No.10 Zhongying Street in the town of Fenghuang County is the former residence of Shen Congwen. The house is a typical Siheyuan, a compound with houses around a square courtyard. It was first constructed in 1866 during the rule of Tongzhi Emperor of Qing Dynasty. | Huangsiqiao Ancient Fort [edit this] | | The Huangsiqiao Ancient Fort is 30km west of Fenghuang County seat. It was first built in 686 during the Tang Dynasty and named Weiyang County. During the Ming Dynasty of Jiaqing Emperor's rule, it was renamed as Fenghuang Camp, which means Phoenix Camp. During the Qing Dynasty, troops were stationed in the fort to repress Miao rebels.
The wall of the fort is about 5m high, 2m wide and the girth of the wall is 500m. The fort covers an area of over 10 acres and has 3 main gates. The construction of the fort combined local construction techniques. Bricks were carefully selected even grey limestone. Limestone bricks were laid and agglutinated by mortar mixed with lime and sticky rice gruel.
Huangsiqiao Ancient Fort is valuable for architecture research of ancient cities as well as the research on ancient Fenghuang City. It has been put down on the list of the important historical sites to be given special protection of Hu'nan Province. | Edit by: Joanna | |
