| | Huanggui glutinous rice wine [edit this] | | Huanggui glutinous rice wine is one of the famous drinks in Xi'an. Since sweet-scented osmanthus is added to the wine when it is made, it is called “Huanggui rice wine”, which means “wine with osmanthus”. It was once called “jade pulp” because it is white in color and thick as soybean milk. Huanggui rice wine is thick, aromatic and delicious. It is boasts a long history. It is said to be the favorite of Lady Yang. Du Fu, a famous Tang Dynasty poet, once described Li Bai's craziness for the wine as “Li Bai can compose dozens of poems after he drinks wine. He often sleeps in the inns at the market in Chang'an.” Research has proven that the wine mentioned in the poem is also rice wine. | Edit by: Ada | |
| Crystal pancakes [edit this] | | Crystal pancakes are traditional Shaanxi pastry bearing a 800-year history. Legend has it that in the Northern Song Dynasty, Kou Zhun, the famous clean official, once went back to his hometown from Beijing. It happened to be his 50th birthday. So his friends and relatives brought peaches, steamed bread, and inscribed wooden boards for his birthday celebration. During the course of the banguet, a servant brought in an intricate wooden box in which Kou found 50 crystal-clear pancakes. The red paper sheet that covered the cakes read, “Penetrating are your eyes, and pure is your heart; being able to tell the loyal from the wicked, you are upright from the start.” The name of the sender was “an old man from Weibei”. Later, Kou's chef learned its cooking technique. The name “Crystal pancakes” given by kou is still in use today. | Edit by: Ada | |
