Cyprus is a divided island where the western and southern parts are under Greek control (Republic of Cyprus) while the northern and eastern parts of the island are aligned with Turkey (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus). The border is maintained by UN Peacekeeping Forces. Cyprus is famous for its golden beaches and medieval castles and monasteries. Salamis, an archaelogical site, is popular with the tourists for its Byzantine and Roman ruins and the completely restored Roman amphitheatre with marble baths. The castle of St. Hilarion is another great place to explore with all its hidden rooms, tunnels and steep staircases. Another major tourist spot in Cyprus is Aphrodite’s Rock, which is a set of two large rocks off the coast, set against the backdrop of white cliffs and the Mediterranean Sea. Some of the famous beaches of Cyprus are the beaches of Anassa, Kyrenia and Acapulo.
