The inside-painted snuff bottles are made of agate, spar, and amber. They are painted with various pictures such as hills, rivers, people and so on in accordance with the specific forms.
There are currently four schools in inside-painted snuff bottle making, namely the Jing School, the Ji School, the Lu School, and the Yue School. Hengshui's snuff bottle belongs to the Ji School. Wang Xisan, its founder, had ever apprenticed himself to Ye Xiaofeng and Ye Fengqi, the third and fourth sons of Ye Zhongsan, a famous snuff bottle master handicraftsman. On the basis of the Yes' handicraft arts and widely assimilating other craftsmen's merits, Wang Xisan shaped his own style in making the snuff bottles which have been called “Ji School”.
The Ji School's inside-painted snuff bottles are well-known both inside and outside China because of their beautiful paintings of hills, rivers, flowers, birds, animals, grasses, trees, insects, and people. |
