Lugou Bridge crosses over the Yongding River at Lugouqiao Town, Fengtai District. The River was formerly called Lugou, and the bridge was named after it. The otherwise name, Marco Polo Bridge, is well known in the west.
At both ends of the bridge stands an imperial stone tablet, with the eastern tablet reading “Dawn Moon at Lugou Bridge”written by Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty and the western one erected by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty to make a record of the reconstruction of the birdge in 1698. In ancient times, the water was pure and soft and the western mountain was verdant. At dawn with the image of the falling moon reflected in water, it appeared brighter and clearer. |
