“the 8th, December” is considered as a festival in buddhism. On that day monks and nuns will cook “Babao Porridge” with glutinous rice, sesame, nut, longan, red jujube, mushroom and lotus seeds, eight kinds of food. They invite the inhabitants there to have holy dinner and give them some to take back to feed the old and the young out of respect for buddha. It gradually developped into the custom for folks to cook the porridge themselves. |
