On both sides of the wall of the Green Resort are large four characters in cursive style carved: Dragon, Tiger, Leopard and Bear, which look vigorous and powerful. It is said it was written by Tao Maosen (a person born and lived in Guiling) in 1858—the eighth year of Emperor Xianfen Reign, Qing Dynasty (1616-1911). They were moved here from other place long ago. This Green Garden is the only one that has no pool among all gardens in Suzhou, and was built by Hong Jun, who was the Number One Scholar in the imperial examination of late Qing Dynasty, and the hubby of the well-known beauty Ms Sai Jinhua. The garden is a rectangle covering more than one acre. The structure is based on the natural landform of the tableland, with four levels, each of which has different layout and scenery is varied. It develops a school of its own in Suzhou Gardens. |
