Introduction of Xiamen City

Xiamen, a scenic port city, is situated at 118.04' east longitude and 24.26' north latitude on the southeast coat of China, directly facing Taiwan Island with Taiwan Straits in between.

This garden city covers a total area of 1,565.09 sq.km, while Xiamen Island proper, floating about a mile off the serpentine coastline, is about 130.56 sq.km, it is said in ancient times flocks of egrets settled on this island, so it is also called Egret Island. Xiamen lies in the Jinmen Bay and at the estuary of the Jiulong River in southeastern Fujian in close proximity to Quanzhou and Zhangzhou, forming the south Fujian Golden Triangle Economic Belt, nestled snugly between the Taiwan Strait and the mainland of China.

Lying in the sub-tropical Zone, Xiamen has maritime climate, and congenial, spring-like weather in four seasons. The city receives abundant sunshine (a total of 2,276 hours annually), a big blessing for those planning to go sunbathing on the beach. The annual average temperature here is 20.8 degrees C. The coldest month, February, never goes below 10 degrees C.

People can enjoy the bright sunlight, the gentle breeze, the lush plants and the colorful flowers all year round. It is one of China's top ten cities suitable for human habitation with its high development in culture and education, its economic prosperity and its picturesque scenery. It is also a famous hometown for overseas Chinese.

Xiamen is rich in resources for tourism. You will be intoxicated with the admirable and pleasing natural scenery as soon as you step into the city of Xiamen. With the colorful and charming harbor seascape, tall buildings, hills matching the seascape, busy streets, tasty food, fashionable goods and gorgeous night scene, Xiamen impresses everyone as a peaceful and prosperous harbor city.

Each year tens of thousands of tourists at home and abroad come here to enjoy the azure sky, blue sea, golden beach, green hills, grotesque rocks, fantastic caves, well-cultivated gardens and parks, rare flowers and plants. They visit the ancient temples and historical sites. They experience special local customs, and taste typical seafoods in south Fujian flavor. In addition, the mild evergreen climate, flowers blooming all the year round, flame trees adding color to the streets, egrets singing and flying in the sky, you can never have a more romantic feeling.

Xiamen has various sightseeing attractions, places of historic interests, and tourist resorts, such as Gulangyu Island, Nanputuo Temple, Ten-thousand Rock Botanical Garden landscape, Jimei scenic spots, and other ecological environment tours outside the island. It has been awarded a number of honorary titles such as “National Sanitary City,” “National Model City for Environmental Protection,” “National Garden City,” “China's Outstanding Tourist City,” and “one of “China's Top 10 Cities for Human Inhabitation,” Xiamen received the gold medal in the competition of Nations in Bloom from UN Environmental Program in 2002.

Besides, Xiamen's hotel accommodation and the services provide every convenience for the comfort of visitors. Granted by the relevant state administrative departments, Xiamen opens its arms to welcome visitors and friends from every corner of the world. If you step on this ancient but modern city, you will surely be attracted by its charming sights and forget to return.
