Mysore History
The word Mysore expands to 'Mahishasurana Ooru', which means the town of Mahishasura. The story goes that the demon Mahishasura was killed by goddess Chamundeshwari atop the Chamundi hill near Mysore. The Wodeyar family ruled Mysore since 14th century except for a short period of 40 years in later 18th century when Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan were the rulers. Mysore has always fascinated with its quaint charm, rich heritage, magnificent palaces, beautifully laid-out gardens, imposing buildings, broad shady avenues and sacred temples. Mysore still retains much of its carefully built character of a Maharaja's capital.
Mysore Fair & Festivals
The festivals which are celebrated in Mysore are:-
Dussehra :- The pride of Mysore's festivals is Dussehra. It is believed that the presiding deity of the city has the power to conquer evil forces and this has led the citizens to celebrate the festival with much gaiety and fervor.
Ayudha Pooja :- It is also a part of the Dussehra celebrations. All vehicles and implements are worshipped on this day. The majestic Elephant adorned by golden anklets, bell and chains carries the city's Patron Goddess Chamundeshwari in a howdah. This extravagant celebration comes to an end with a torchlight parade by the State Police, as fireworks light up the night sky.
Mysore Best Season
The weather in Mysore is pleasant throughout the year. Summers are warm and winters cool. The best time to visit the city is from October to March.
