Tian'anmen Square, the largest square in the world, is situated at the center of the city proper.
With a length of 880 meters from south to north, a width of 500 meters from east to west and an area of 440,000 square meters, the square can hold about one million people. It was the place where the grand and solemn ceremony for the founding of the People's Republic of China was held on October 1, 1949. At the northern end of Tian'anmen square is the city gate tower, in the sky; in the center erects the Monument of Chinese People's Heroes; in the east and west are the Great Hall of the People and the Chinese State Museum, after opposite to each other; in the south stand the Memorial Hall of Mao Zedong and Zhengyang Gate Tower.
