Zaijou Pavilion

  [edit this]

It is said that Su Dongpo often visited Mountain Lingyun, and once when he was strolling on a boat in the river, he was intoxicated with the beautiful landscape of Hanjia and sighed with emotion:“Wishing to be the satrap of Hanjia, I would visit Mountain Lingyun while carrying wine to drink”. Zaijou Pavilion was named to commemorate him. Zaijou Pavilion is located opposite the stone inscription “the place where Su Dongpo carried wine with him on his tour” which was inscribed by Guo Weichen, the Satrap of Jiazhou, on the right cliff of the Doushuai Palace. Resting in the Zaijou Pavilion, one can observe the three rivers and overlook Mountain Emei. Fan Chengda, a poet in Song Dynasty, wrote in his poem:“It is said here is the place where Su Dongpo visited while carrying wine for drink, Thousands of Buddha statues welcomed me to the mountain top when I arrived. The rivers lashed Nine-peak Mountain just like a tempest passing. While clouds covered three mountains, floating day and night.”

Zaijou Pavilion is a good place to view sights while resting.

According to the historical records:“Zhuyi Cave is right on the night side of Mountain Lingyun, and can hold 10 persons sitting.” It is said that An You, a person from Jiazhou in the Ming Dynasty, commented on the Book of Changes in this cave. Afterwards, the magistrate Yuan Zirang engraved articles and pictures of the Book of Changes on five steles and stood the steles in the cave, which remain to this day. A Taiji diagram or Taijitu is etched on the cave, there are over ten steles, such as Pixel Philosophy of Book of Changes, the Eight Diagrams and Yinyang, the Eight Diagrams, the Instinctive and Postnatal Eight Diagrams, Yinyang Balance Diagram, Diagram of Distance, etc. The stele designs are elegant in sculpture and fluent in line, and the accomplishments of calligraphy have reached the level of ancient people and are in the style of two Wangs (Wang Xizi and Wang Xianzi) from the Wei and Jin Dynasties. Zhuyi Cave is a deep connotation of the culture of the Book of Changes and has great tour and research value.

Mahao Cliff Tombs

  [edit this]

Recently, the Mahao Cliff Tombs have become the Leshan Han-dynasty Cliff Tomb Museum. In this museum, the Mahao Cliff Tombs are the principal exhibit, shown in two exhibition halls: the South Exhibition Hall and the North Exhibition Hall, in which unearthed cultural relics from Han-dynasty Tombs can be seen. It holds the survey of Leshan Han-dynasty Cliff Tombs. These cliff tombs were misnamed as “Ape Cave”, “Savage's Cave” and some other names. During the period of the War of Resistance Against Japan, universities and colleges of the whole country began to move inland, and Yang Jigao and Shang Chengzha, professors of Nanjing Jinling University, carried out first-hand investigations of the Mahao Cliff Tombs. They believed that these were a type of grave from the period of the Donghan Dynasty, and they carved the research inscription in seal character:“For these Han-dynasty tomb figures, there are in total 35 different ones, which are the finest among the tombs in Nan'an (Leshan at the present)”. In January of the year Minguo 29, it was found by Yang Jigao (Panqu) and affirmed by Shang Chengzha (Yufan). In October, Yang and Shang led the Chinese cultural research institute of Jinling University here and made rubbings to preserve it for future generations in the hope that they would prevent it from being damaged forever.
