Beijing Zoo is located at the north of Xizhimenwai Avenue, Xicheng District. It is the largest zoo in China and one of the most famous zoos all over the world.
Beijing Zoo was originally an imperial demesne in the Ming Dynasty, and then a private garden of the royal family in the Qing Dynasty, later was turned into an agricultural experimental field in 1906, and finally made a zoo in 1955. Now Beijing Zoo covers an area of about 50 hectares, more than 6,000 animals of over 500 species are on show. The zoo has abundant protected wild and rare animals, such as pandas-the treasure of China, golden monkeys, white-lip deer, elks, yahins, Northeast China tiger, turtledoves, and all kinds of fcranes.
Additionally, the zoo collects and shows the representative rare animals from the rest of the world, e. g. white polar bears, wild bulls from America, kangaroos from Australia, brown bears from Europe, zebras, horned horses, giraffes, elephants and snakes from Africa, etc.
