| | Wuxiang Plaza [edit this] | | In Wuxiang (Five Elephants) Plaza, which used to be called Jinhu Plaza, the five-elephant sculpture and the fountain around it are telling visitors the history and culture of Nanning. Since the ancient time, Nanning was famed as an elephant city, with many legends about elephants handed down from the common people. The best-known one is the story about Mountain Wuxiang (Five-Elephant), which is the origin of the Wuxiang sculpture. The story goes that during the Warring States Period, in order to control the frequent flood in the south, Emperor Qin Shi Huang sent the five holy elephants in Lingnan to stop up the mountain torrents, but when approaching Nanning, the five elephants were reluctant to go any further. Emperor Qin Shi Huang patted one of the elephants on the bottom, but missed it, which made him furious. He did not realize it had been a dream before he woke up. Doubtfully, he sent people to inquiry about this and found out that five mountains similar to elephants had just abruptly risen. Since then, the flood in Nanning reduced and Wuxiang Mountain became the auspicious image protecting Nanning.
Wuxiang Plaza was initially named Jinhu Plaza. However, Wuxiang Fountain, a symbol of Nanning, was built in the plaza, and moreover, because of the mysterious legend, changing the name to Wuxiang (Five-Elephant) Plaza would be more vivid and acceptable. In the end, according to the related naming standard and the opinion of most residents, the present name was used. | Edit by: Tom | |
