Tianmo Desert, 90 kilometers away from Beijing, is located in Mountain Longbao in the southwest of Donghuayuan, Huailai. As the western exit of Beijing, Tianmo Desert links together the Badaling Great Wall and Kangxi Grassland.

There are two grand Sand dunes. The east sand dune is more than 300 meters long from north to south and the west one is nearly l,000 meters long. Covering an area of nearly 500 mu, both of the dunes are over 100 meters wide and about 30 meters high. The scenic spot is at the foot of Mountain Qipan in the south and beside the Guanting Reservoir on the north. Admiring such scenic splendors of Tianmo Desert, together with mountains, grassy marshland and Gobi, one can not help sighing with emotions, “The solitary smoke rises high in a vast stretch of yellow sand and the round sun is setting gradually into the river.” There is no source of sand in the vicinities of several hundred kilometers. Is it formed by the fierce northwest wind, piling-up grains of sand or by changing river courses? Some research has been done, but it still remains a mystery.

Tianmo Desert is also a famous outdoor base of film and television. Parts of the scenes are filmed here in more than 100 films and television plays, such as HuanZhugege ,Pilgrimage to the West, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, etc.

Yongding River

The Yongding River was originally called the Wuding (Unstable) River, which often caused serious flooding. Yongding (stable) was bestowed upon the river by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, who wanted to improve the unstable and dangerous river by his precious words, which actually did not work at all. It is the Guanting Reservoir, started in October 1951 and completed in 1954 that cut the river in the middle and made it really stable and safe.

Along the banks of the Yongding River valley, which is over 100 kilometers long from the dam of Guanting Reservoir to Sanjiadian, west of Beijing, there are many scenic spots, such as the ancient battlefield where the warriors of the Yangs in the Song Dynasty fought for Youzhou, Yixiantian (A Gleam of sky), Stone Bridge, Wooden Bridge, Cable Bridge, No.1 Tower in Asia, Sanxian (Three-Immortals) Cave, and Seven Gate Towers where Qi Jiguang, the national hero of the Ming Dynasty, guarded the frontier pass.

Drifting in the Yongding River, started in 1995, is the earliest drifting event and has produced a great impact in North China. The surroundings here are picturesque. There are green hills, clear waters, remote forests, a deep and secluded valley, etc. Drifting down the valley, you can swim and play with water. Climbing the hills, hunting, having a picnic and sleeping in the open often carry tourists away. You can enjoy both traveling and exploring by drifting down the valley. You can set your mind at ease since it is extremely interesting and thrilling but by no means dangerous.

Rongcheng Grape Manor lies in the southern bank of Guanting Lake (Reservoir), which is 35 kilometers west of the Badaling Great Wall. Yekang Road is on its south and the Guanting Lake is on its north with an over 2,000-meter-long lakeshore. The modernized Rongchen Manor combines grape planting, wine making, research, popular science and education, and tourism into one. As the largest private grape manor in China, it has a fine national grape plantation, in which a variety of grapes are planted for wine making. Entering the manor, tourists will find lamps, iron chairs, buildings and decorations of European style, all reflecting the profound culture of wine. Rongchen Manor was designated an International Base of Research on Agricultural Education and Training Center by the UNESCO in March 2001.

The Grassland on Mountain Top is located in the south of Yuxian County, 220 kilometers away from Zhangjiakou City.

It covers an area of 32 square kilometers,2,158 meters above sea level. It is wide from north to south, long and narrow from west to east. In the north there is a vast expanse of level grassland stretching to the horizon. In the north there is a primeval forest covering an area of more than 8,000 mu. The average temperature in daytime is around 15℃. It is cool in summer and there is so dust and in the air in spring. Flowers of various kinds are in bloom on the verdant grassland. It is better to call it grden than grassland. You can enjoy the flat and verdant carpet like grassland and experience “looking at flowers while riding a horse.” It is marvelous to see the coexistence of several climates and thus the changeable weather. It is enveloped in mist one moment and clear up the next. When it is clear and sunny, you can look far into the distance. Birds are flying and singing. When it is foggy, heaven and earth combine into one and you may feel like walking in the clouds and traveling in the picture. The deciduous forest is the haunt of pheasants, hares, roe deer, foxes, sheep, etc.
