Mountain Wulei

Mountain Wulei lies in the east of Cili county, 20km away from the town. The scenic zone covers an area of 100 square kilometers.

Mountain Wulei is a holy place for Taoism. There over 100 temples, 36 halls, 72 palaces and 48 villages in the mountain area. Natural scenery is also very rich in Mountain Wulei. Peaks of different shapes, streams, springs, rare plants and so on attract visitors.

Mountain Heaven Gate

Mountain Heaven Gate is independent and platform shaped, 8km from the downtown of Zhangjiajie City. The altitude of the mountain is 1,517.9m. The flat top covers an area of 2 square kilometers. On the east side cliff, there is a limestone cave running through the top like a huge gate. It was so named Mountain Heaven Gate.

The altitude counting from the bottom of the cave is 1,246m. The cave is 131.5m high, 37m wide and 30m deep. The altitude and strategically located and difficult of access are rare in the world.

Mountain Heaven Gate was recorded in the history. It was first recorded during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Later in 246 during the Three Kingdoms Period, it was named Mountain Heaven Gate by Emperor Wujing and Tianmen County was set up accordingly.

Li River runs in the valley of the mountains. Within 10km the height different is as high as over 1,300m. It thus formed the precipitous Mountain Heaven Gate.

Mountain Heaven Gate has rich vegetation. The forest coverage is over 90%. On the top of the mountain, there are about 307 acres sub-primeval forest. 134 families of vascular bundle plants are found. Vertical vegetation distribution is clearly seen in the mountain. The mountain is also a natural herb resource, where over 200 herbs have been found.

The mountain is also a heaven for wild animals. Over 10 spices such as deer, macaque, wild boar, fox, wild goat, unicorn, pangolin inhabit in the mountain.

Mountain Heaven Gate has a long history. It used to be a ideal place for personages to retreat. Cultural relics and historical sites like temples, tombs and steles still can be seen in the mountain.

The main scenic spots of Mountain Heaven Gate are Gorge Cave, Heaven Gate Cave, Heaven Groove Waterfall, Temple of Mountain Heaven Gate, Cloud Dream Peak and so on.

Lotus Town

Formerly named Wang Village, Lotus Town is governed by Yongshun County. The film Lotus Town with Wang Village as its model was shot here, so the name Lotus Town is still used nowadays. It is an antique town with 2,000-odd-year history and culture and has a strong Tujia folklore. The original appearance of the town is well preserved: the Tujias' houses, called Diaojiaolou, are built leaning on the hill; the bluestone paths extend along the slope.

Maoyan River Scenic Zone

Maoyan River is a 50-kilometerin-river lying in the upstream area of Li River in Yongding District of Zhangjiajie City. It is also called Rock River because of rocky cliffs on both sides of the river.

Maoyan River is famous for the green mountains along the river, clear water, queer rocks, many shoals and rapids. Inspired by Yangtse River drifting Yongding District Tourism Bureau started Maoyan River drifting program in 1986. Drifting in the river one can experience the breathtaking feeling of drifting as well as enjoy the sight of the particularly beautiful scene along the river. There are over 30 scenic spots along the river. Among which the Rock River Gorge is the best of all. Cliffs rise steeply up to 500 meters. Many water falls are seen on both sides of the river. Shuidongzi Water Fall is the most magnificent one. Water pours out from a cave 70 meters above the river and formed a huge several decameters wide before it falls scattered into the river.

Maoyan River scenic area is also known for its hot spring. Hot springs distribute on both sides of an ancient crossing at downstream of Li River in Wentang Town. On one side of the river, the average temperature of the hot spring water is 50℃. Its water level is the same of the river level. Local farmers enjoy taking bath in the hot spring. The hot spring level is higher than the river level on the other side of the river. The average water temperature is 37 to 39℃ and the hourly flux can reach 300 tons. The hot spring water is high quality mineral water which is good for prevention and cure of illness. Bathrooms were built up for tourists to enjoy the hot spring water.

Mountain Badagong

Mountain Badagong locates in Sangzhi County. It became National Nature Reserve in 1998.

The nature reserve covers an area of 250 square kilometers. The summer and autumn there are relatively short. The average annual rainfall is over 2,100mm and the mountain area is one of four heavy rainfall areas of Hunan Province.

The most complete and large coverage ever-green broad leaf forest of subtropical zone is well preserved in Badagong Mountain. The trace of South China tiger, a close to extinction tiger, was found in the mountain. Therefore the mountain has more scientific value.
